Ok, i need to get a new set of cans for my computer. I'm listening to the headphone out on my klipsch 2.1 promedia's. Don't know if the jack is amplified or whatnot but it sounds ALOT better than the line out on my NFORCE 2. When i go back to school in a few weeks i may not bring the klipsch's along because they're a pain to drag back and forth. So i need a set that can be driven either way.
I listen to Metal (Nu, death and just plain heavy), Classical and the occasional blues album if the sound quality is good enough. It would also be used for first person shooters for pinpointing positions.
I would just use my KSC-35's but they just kill my ears after a couple hours of wolfenstein. So comfort is definately an issue in my case. Isolation shouldn't matter in the least.

I can get those mentioned headphones for:
SR60-$76 with shipping at headphone.com
HD280-$65 with free shipping from newegg.com
HD497-$48 with free shipping at newegg.com

My range is anything under $80 unless another set is just obnoxiously better and not much more.
Any opinions would be welcomed warmly

No one can offer a very accurate opinion to you, because some poeple hate senn and love grado (like me) and some are the exact opposite its all personal taste. if you like your music energetic and very entertaining go grado. Senn is a relaxed layed back sound, good if you listen to music to chill out and relax.

and by the way its not as fun if you ask for the greeting, so now you only get half

Ok a few things have changed in the last week. I bought a sony D-15 PCDP and have decided to get the fixup super mini amp later this week. Also i've added the Sennheiser PX200 to the mix.
Now just hypothetically what is the best possible combination can i get out of the aformentioned parts?

Couple other questions: does anyone have a good closeup pic of the px200's? Also how long does it take fixup to send out the amp normally?

Although I cannot comment on the other options on your list, I can say that the SR-60s sound very good from even a portable source.

Damn you people! I thought i would just get a set of headphones and be done with it but nooooo. Now i have a new cd player coming in along with my first headphone amp (which i wasn't going to buy in the first place). I'm probably gonna end up with the HD 497's shortly; but i've already got plans for another set of headphones after that.
Is there some place i can get help for this purchasing disease i seem to have caught?

I have recently purchased the HD 497s and am using them with an iPod and could not be happier with the purchase. The bass response and detail in the mids and highs is incredible.

You should check out www.headroom.com if you already haven't. They are far and away the most comprehensive site regarding headphones on the web.

Good luck with your purchase.

Duxxy,

I just got a set of 497's, and am extremely impressed. HeadRoom states that they are good with portables but improve significantly with an amplifier. I can definitely vouch for that - this is the first headphone that I can tell a definite difference with and without the amp (I have a HeadRoom Total AirHead). So since you have an amp, the 497's would be a good match. Price-wise, they are a great value.

I also heard the Grados at the Headroom Tour last summer and was very impressed, although I've heard that they do not improve much with an amp. They had sr60s with both the comfy pads and the donut pads. The donut pads sounded much better than the stock comfy pad sr60s. So it seems like it would be smarter to get the sr80s because they come with the donut pads (the sr60s + donut pads would cost about the same as the sr80s). Also, the sr80s are said to sound better with an amp. I definitely will add a Grado to my collection in the future.

I should also mention that I listen to mostly jazz, and I've heard that the 497's may be preferable for this music, whereas the Grado's are typically thought of as a better rock headphone.
