I do not have an amp, and I read on HeadRoom that SR80s are only worth it if you have an amp, but I'm asking you the people for personal opinions on which I should go with. I'll be using them with my Zen Vision M and my laptop.

Thanks in advance.

You can't go wrong with either of these. If you can pay, just get the SR-80. I think both take advantage of amplification and keep in mind that you'll be getting an amp soon ...

There is def. a percentage of Grado owners out there that think the SR60 is better than the 80- even though it is cheaper. I can't speak on this exactly because I only have one half of the equation, the 60. But the 60 is very sweet.

I own an SR80,and i love it out of my Zune and my Chaintech AV710 soundcard.
It especially rocks out of my old Realistic STA2100D (made by Pioneer for RadioShack in the late 70's and early 80's).

The right amp does improve these, but even without an amp,for the price nothing really beats it. Maybe something out there is equal, but different i think.

If you plan on a recable someday, then get the 60's because the 80's are just 60's with a 4 wire cable and different ear pads. Same drivers and enclosures etc.,oh and 80 on the buttons instead of 60...lol.

They should definately be on everyones list to own for an inexpensive entry into audiophile headphones. They are better for music that is fast and punchy, rather than laid-back classical etc......theyre detail phones more than smooth and mellow and warm......but really you can play anything through them. Sometimes i EQ them a bit for stuff.
They probably sound best with tube amps,as the Grado family likes tube equipment and turntables, and possibly designed them around this sound.

I own all the headphones listed in my profile and always go back to my 80's eventually. Ill still buy other phones, but for some music ill always use my 80's!

I've owned both and the only reason I sold the SR-60s is because they sounded a lot like the SR-80s (when both had bowls). That said, bowls definitely improve the sound (IMO). HeadRoom seems biased towards Senns. ALL headphones benefit from an amp...not just the SR-80s. I can't think of a headphone that doesn't benefit from an amp. Goodcans.com has a little more info.

The 60s for sure will do fine with out an amp. I tried mine straight out of the ZVM headphone out and they did suprisingly well. The iGrado has been getting most of the portable action around these parts as of late.

Hey Brook, you need to put Sold on the Portapros in your sig

Great thread, I was actually wondering about the two models after trolling some old posts. There still seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions on them.

Seems to me that the Sr80 is just a "nice to have", whereas most of the reviews I've seen on the Sr60 are "Go out right now and get them".

I'd be using them with a 5.5G ipod, which is pretty weak with any headphone even after messing with the EQ. Any experience with the Sr60s and the 5.5G ipod out there?

Also, I've read that the Sr60 and Sr80 are only shipping with bowl pads now, is this true?

A lot of people start at the 60s and it's their first foray into good headphones. Plus, they're cheap, so they deserve a lot of praise. The 60s come with comfies. Most people replace these or mod them.
