I think that the comfort with the SR-80's improve over time. First it might be slightly uncomfortable to use them for about an hour, but after a few weeks they improve (or you get used to the comfort). A flat pad can always be purchased, which largely improves comfort (i've heard).

The bass is the tightest I've heard.

Unamped, I say go for the SR-60. If you are going to use an amp, go for the SR-80, I think it's more explosive sounding (in a good way

) than the SR-60 when amped.

I find the Grados uncomfortable. The real question for me is whether physical comfort can outlast listener fatigue with them.

do u think the SR60 will sound good with my soundblaster audigy 2 ZS? oh and one more question is the MDR-V700DJ($94), HD485($80), and the HD 280 ($100) better than the grado SR60? oh and out of those 3 headphones, which one is better?
thanks!

Scratch the MDR-V700DJ from your list. It definitely isn't in the same league with the other cans that you're considering, sound-quality-wise; in fact, for hi-fi or music listening the MDR-V700DJ is in a much lower class than the others on your list.

However, I wouldn't really recommend the HD280 for your listening tastes, as the relatively hollow midbass/lower midrange response may be frustrating.

The HD485 is a good choice -- if you like a lot of bass from everything you listen to. But not everyone likes a lot of bass from their music.

In your case, I would stick with Grados. Though the added bass from the Senn HD485 does add somewhat to your rock and metal listening, the rest of the sound from the HD485 would be a bit too laid back.

Either would do. But the SR-80 would scale a bit better than the SR-60 if you decide to use a dedicated headphone amp in the future.

SR60 are a great entry can for around 50 bucks, and gives you that John Grado killer sound.

The SR80...for that price I would consider spending a bit more and getting an Alessandro MS-1 for $99 shipped. IMHO a superior can at a bargain cost for the next price tier up from the SR60.

All Grado headphones are the exact same shape, size, feel (up to the the SR-225). The higher models feel the same, but weigh a little more.

buy the MS1: http://www.alessandro-products.com/main.html
buy the SR-60/SR-80 here: toddthevinyljunkie.com
