I made the mistake of not matching the grain of cups and gimbals with my first attempt (cocobolo cups). Those are the things you have to learn...
And, this IS my first woodworking attempt. I am lousy at such things, it is just that I love this thread and modding. By the way, just finished my rod holders ...

Man, another beautiful pair of zebras... and gimbals with rod thingies! Great job there. Is that a Jmoney headband?

Yes, it's a JMoney's. Very nice aesthetically, really great craftsmanship. Yet, I must say I do not find it really comfortable. A little too thick IMO for light wood shells, better suited to make heavy aluminum cups bearable.

Markkr, Those cups of Marty's look very, very nice!  I'm sure you'll be all OCD and waiting for FedEx to arrive.

Stratocaster, You've done well, man!  Real well!  I'm sure that 30 y.o. drill press probably has more accuracy than any under $500 model today.  Keep up the good work ... never lose your inspiration.

I also received the driver (SR-60) from Questhate via FedEx today!  Thanks !!!!! ... I'll get into this one soon and see if I can't resolve the issue so there hopefully will be an available "spare" SR series driver for the community here if someone hurts theirs.

I can't do much else tonight.  Had a very productive day at work.  I had my MS-1i headphones with the smaller wooden cups on at the office.  I just get carried away into my music and all other distractions get pulled away -- I can code reports like a mad-man when I have the Grados on.

Unfortunately, I didn't take my cell phone into work and my wife couldn't tell me until I got home that our upstairs was 10 degrees hotter due to the A/C not working right.  Arg!  I've reset everything, and she's rolling again, but I need to see if the temp can drop some so we can sleep up there tonight.  I suspect that we have another capacitor failing on us.  A silly $13.00 part.  However, when you call A/C service, they want $250 - $300 to fix it for you.  I'll live with the heat for tonight and head to a supply house in the morning to get a new one and install it myself (10 minutes of work).  I meant to buy a couple of these up to have on hand because that unit seems to blow one about every 2 years, on average.  Well, it's about that time.

I can't wait to scratch some money together to try Marty's cups out... I'm gonna just hang them on a Woo Audio headphone stand and just oogle them all day

Like many in this thread I felt Bila inspiring and his comments always worth reading. I have been waiting for cups from him for months and did not get them. Like many. I have resolved my issues with Bill, and I hope he will eventually sort everything out and pop up in this thread again.
And one thing he - all well as all other people in the SR60mod thread, really started is getting people hooked on a new hobby.  After I have been waiting months for Bila cups I bought two sets of Cabillas' well crafted shells and I love them. But finally, after all the venting and dampening and stuff, I decided to move on to making my own woodies with my 30-year-old drill press. So here we go with my first ever wood cups.
Yeah, and once again, thank you Bila for your inspiration.

Awesome work Strat-O-Cat. I have been thinking about joining a wood club that's available to residents in the community I live in. Today I went down and plunked down the initiation fee and the yearly dues. I have an orientation class next week to learn about all the goodies in their 8,000 sq. ft. shop. My next set of cups are going to be completely DIY. I echo your sentiments about this thread and Bila's contagious enthusiasm and everyone else's contagious enthusiasm in constantly prodding me to want to go another step with this mod thing. Anyway I hope my first set of cans look as awesome as yours.

Question though where did you get those screws for your gimbal rings?

I had the most interesting idea today...what if we could somehow make a brand that matched the original font and model line to brand our cups with? Anyone know how to start?

I use a threaded metal rod with a diameter of 3mm that I cut into fitting lengths for my gimbal rods and gimbal side holders. To cover the upper part I use the sort of female screw you see in the pic.

If I'm not mistaken, you have some nuts that you attached to the threaded rod, correct?  Also, the nuts don't have the open ends exposed, but are covered, right?  I think that's the kind of thing you find in Lowes or Home Depot in the tiny drawer section.  This kind of gives is the "finished" appearance like a lug nut on an aluminum car rim - if I understand correctly and from looking at the pictures.

Use the original cups to make a plaster casting then make a mould out of that..?

Cabillas, most here seem to punch 4 holes. I'm happy with 6

im happy with 6 holes too

4 was just not enough for me.. i put 6 holes then placed some blu tack and thought it sounded awful (maybe i used too much) so i removed some and left a really thin layer of blu tack ..listened to it again and it made a big smile on my face
beyersmile.png

i wonder what will happen with 10 holes..hmmmm..

10 holes probably will mean too much air being pushed out as the bass will bleed into the midrange somewhat. I've noticed that 10 holes are meant to be used with Jumbos. Personal preference as to sound sig will determine how much are enough.

Woohoo! The Mod thread is back up and running! This makes me glad because the modifications, and the community they bind together are about half the reason I come to head-fi. It was mentioned earlier in the thread about posting a wiki, and although I feel I've been tooting my own horn *toots horn* too much in the other Grado thread's, I'll post the links here to the in-progress Grado wiki-space here on head-fi.

Posting a wiki here is as easy as posting a post, so anyone can do it. I've got a "main" page up for general info, as well as posting links to pages on individual/groups of mods, as well as a page specifically for pad information/mods. Late last night I started a thread for discussion of the wiki: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/561540/grado-mod-archival-project where we can coordinate our efforts. I also archived the first 50pgs of the original mod thread to my laptop in case it gets deleted, so the information is still there. I'll get the rest of the pages today after my calc final.

Here's a link to the wiki with what little I have so far, I'd be honored to have some of you join me in this project, especially providing pictures of various mods/writing up individual mod articles. Thanks!

Here are some picks of my modded SR80i headphones. The mods include: custom DIY leather headband, Bilavideo Wooden cups, dyanmated drivers, 10 holes poked, loin clothe removed, quater modded comfies, and finally a more open mesh. Future mods: silver cable, JMoney headband. Thanks to everyone who has helped make this possible!
