SR-71 value going down?

Sep 20, 2005 at 3:55 AM Post #46 of 58
Prices are absolutely market-driven. Everybody jumped on the SR-71 FOTM bandwagon when it was the hottest new thing. A lot of the people who bought these were FOTM buyers who are always looking for something new and better. Now that there are many of these on the market, it's natural that some of these FOTM buyers will be looking to get out of their SR-71 at a loss and into the next FOTM.
Personally, when I bought my SR-71, I thought the SR-71 was the best portable out there. I still think so. Mine's not going anywhere. I still plan to buy a second one for a buddy (new bikes and a new car have temporarily put that on hold).
Has the SR-71 changed or become less awesome? Not a bit. It's just plain old supply and demand, folks. Once the suckers have been cleared out, the price will stabilize. In the meanwhile, I'll be looking for bargains!

Although it wasn't directed at me; for the record, I'd only sell my amp cause I'm thinking bout leaving the headphone life. Barely used my home setup in weeks.

seriously, LOTS of people in head-fi are FOTM buyers. it's a good thing actually, for people who are picking up second hand stuff that is. I've been picking up headphones in the FS/FT just to try them out, and it's always possible to sell them back with minimal loss

and if people got lucky getting some perfect condition stuff....it's really a keeper, and it saves $$. FOTM buyers lose, sec hand buyers(patient buyers) win

it's the same reason why I didn't bother jumping into the hf-1 bandwagon and for the same 200bucks(maybe a little more), I've got myself an sr60 and er4 from the FS/FT. And when peopel start dumping the hf-1 (it will happen, most likely

) I'll sell the er4 and give the hf-1 a try.

I have to agree. The SR71 still sounds as good as when people raved about it, not any less because it is now 10 or 11 months old. I am selling mine because I am leaving for the country and need to trim down what I have. Otherwise i would keep it. I think used is the way to buy.

The SR-71 no doubt is a great portable amp.

But this reduced pricing for used units demonstrates clearly the fanboyism of this hobby. The unit is no less great because others are growing tired of their units. It just gives those who are not first adopters a better shot at great stuff. Isn't the market great?

This also demonstrates why some manufactures want to keep their units evolving. This keeps the hype up on them. In reality they have to do this because we as fanboys demand it, otherwise, we do what is going on with the SR-71. Maybe we do not demand it openly but by our actions.

IMHO....

I think the price is coming down for used SR-71 amps but not the value. Mine sounds as good as it did on the first day I got it and I have one of the first ones produced. I actually have bought almost nothing in the last year even though I have had the urge several times. I am very happy with my headphone setups as well as my speaker gear. I have however continued to buy Cd's and records.

I agree...what a great little amp. I'm never selling mine.

Peace,

Well, all SR-71s are built to the same exact specifications, and your SR-71 should be fully burned-in and all, so I doubt the sound would change over time, lol.

Relative to other amps...yes the value remains the same. The SR-71 is still ahead of the game IMO.

I am not an SR-7 owner, nor have I heard one. However, that does not diminish in any way interest in what seems to be an excellent product (or other headamps - however, my listening cycle has currently swung back to my speakered gear).

That being said, I understand there are pluses to buying used gear, and have picked up a couple pieces of used gear at fair prices. However, in cases where my discretionary income allows it, I generally prefer to purchase new due to a few factors/preferences. In buying new:

1) I know I should be receiving a completely unblemished, perfect, unabused unit. I try, and think I succeed, in babying my gear including keeping it well maintained and flawless in appearance (I note this is certainly helped by having a dedicated listening room, no small children, and keeping pets out of the listening room.). If I buy new, any defect in it when I receive it will be would be due to the shipping/packaging/manufacturing, all of which allow me recourse and remedy. [The treatment of audio gear by various shipping companies, and purchasers' individual problems with this issue, are more fully discussed in other threads in this and other forums.] I have had to return new products damaged in shipping, and was protected from any loss on my audio investment outside of the time involved.

2) I will have the manufacturer's full warranty. I know it's an imperfect world; even with the best QC, some defect may be present or occur. If a defect presents itself immediately or sometime during the warranty period, my investment is protected. This has come in handy over the years with both audio and non-audio items.

3) With the new component fully burned-in in my system, I may not find it brings the anticipated synergy in my system, in spite of my product research. Numerous quality manufacturers have a limited new purchase return policy, and I may need to avail myself of the policy (this hasn't happened yet), and subsequently only be out the shipping/restocking fee.

4) I have a daughter to whom I can hand down my older, seasoned gear. This saves her $, and has cultivated her own passion with things musical. I find I've held on to audio gear for quite some time (we are talking at least 10 years or so) before upgrading; the exception to this has been tubes, an area that seemingly brings its own set of issues.

5) The price break between buying new or used is not perceived to be significant enough to buy used. I imagine this paradigm differs for each person as to what constitues being "significant" enough.

Just my thoughts on the issue. I also note I'm cognizant of the value in purchasing quality used gear, as well as the risk involved in purchasing used. YMMV.
