I've seen alot of SR-71's coming up in the FS forums used (mine included) and noticed that the prices keep dropping on these. True, one might pop up with the silkscreening coming off, and priced appropriately. But overall, these are steadily dropping in price for "used but in excellent condition".

Is everyone holding out for the Hornet, which they can get new for $350 (or even $300 if they got on the reserve list), or has the SR-71 been knocked off the "top portable amp" pedestal because of new amps like the AE-1 and the forthcoming Hornet?

Opinions?

i did see one go for below 300 recently which shocked me. all i know is that it's a buyer's market if that continues, and folks are going to regret selling the SR71 for that cheap once all the alternatives are on the market proper and a full comparo is done - only one portable amp beats it imho, the coda with desktop module, but it's a bit impractical to take on the go imho. the sr71 is just small enough to portable around and the sound is amazing.

Likely, less expensive alternatives have decreased the willingness to pay for a used item. Also, I always thought that the used price on an SR-71 didn't make it worth it over a new one. Would you buy a used SR-71 at only a 10% discount from new?

appar111 i just saw that you put your SR71 up for sale! was it not to your liking? did you find a better alternative to your ears? not based on reading or hype, but an actual listen? if not, i'd suggest keeping your amp until something definitely better comes around (which might take awhile).

I was lucky enough to pick up an sr-71 at $250 plus paypal and shipping. I was very lucky. Had I not bought that one, I would have been all over ken36's sr-71 and rechargeables/maha charger for I believe $330. I think the real value is probably in the $300 to $325 range. Regardless of the other amps that have or are coming out, the sr-71 is still a great amp.

I've actually got it up for sale because I need to pay off some other debts. It does sound great and is just a piece of work when it comes to fit and finish. I actually got rid of some other items on ebay and ended up getting the HD580's back, and I'm sure they'll sound stellar w/ the SR-71 for classical (I'll know tonight-- just got the 580's in the mail today). The combo may sound so good that I'll just find a workaround for the other debts, but then again, that's how I ended up getting more debt to begin with!

I know I can find a suitable alternative for not much money-- I'd probably go back to the Go-Vibe mk II or possibly Mk III, since the mk II sounded very good with the HD580's, it's opamp roll-able, and I can get it for $75 shipped, and put about $225-250 towards some other debts.

The price fall is good news for some of us though. What with shipping over to the UK and the customs cost I've been waiting for the first one to go for $250 plus shipping/paypal.

I'd like to hear one but we have so few UK meets and I don't think there are many over here anyway.

I would consider it too rude to lowball (is that the correct phrase?) a seller if the amp is as good as some say.

What will come first either my Hornet which I'm on the list for, or a sudden drop in the SR71 price where I'll pick one up anyway, I wonder...

If the price does continue to fall I may put a WTB thread up.

Hehe same as me. Actually, I've been quite tempted to get the one that went for under $300. If I wasn't down for the Hornet already..

Plus, wasn't there a talk of an updated SR-71?

i guess everything loses value after awhile, yet my point was
speculating about the pricing isn't going to say much, it's really a complicated affair between headfi buying habits and what people consider and do not consider a fair price.

Without sounding offensive, alot of these prices are outrageous to begin with, it's only a matter of time that the prices end up down to earth. I think this is a good thing.

I guess it really is market driven, I would have to agree with you that to most people at least, the prices on headphone stuff does seem pretty outrageous. I know what my bottom line is as far as what I'd let my SR-71 go for-- below that amount and I'd rather keep it.

I have mine for 290 because I leaving for China and I only need one amp and one with an internal recharging system is the most convient. The 71 has a very good sound and I see no reason that prices should drop.
