Would the SR-71 be a sufficient amplifier to get the best out of the Sennheiser HD 650s...?

Yeah, I'd imagine so. It's supposed to have a lot of power and a clean, sweet, very good sound. Your ears will tell you if it's worth it. I'm betting it is.

I don't know about "best". It does a damn good job though. I've got it hooked up to a FMJ 33 and it sounds great.

I played with the same setup as Lextek over the weekend -- CD33/SR-71/HD650s. You won't be disappointed. The only caveat is that you will reveal the flaws in your source; I noticed some faint hiss originating from my laptop's Echo Indigo sound card. Prepare to be tempted to upgrade your source.
