I'm eyeballing these for absolutely NO reason at all...well...maybe because they're "cheap" ES phones. I'm ignorant when it comes to electrostatic stuff... but am in the market for some new phones again. I searched (a lot), but only found comparison reviews with other stax systems. How do these stack up to say the E500s? Naturally you can't REALLY compare dynamic drivers to electrostatic... but I don't really have a choice. I see a lot are saying they lack bass, and the treble rolls... my current portable rig involves a pair of HIGHLY modded sony EX90s...so that's what these would replace.... I also am using a pair of highly modded (rewired, unveiled...etc) HD485s. Should I just save the cash for some high-end cans, or should I jump the gun and get the sr-001s and buy the cans in a month or so?

PS. How good is the soundstage on the sr-001s? I saw a lot of people asking this question throughout the forum, but no one ever really responded to this. I pretty much either consider it "In your head" like the etys, natural sounding like the e4s, or surreal like high-end cans. I'm hoping it's not "In your head" SS.

Anyway, thanks.

PS2...do you guys know how much I've spent since I signed up on this board? :-\

I don't find the Baby Stax to lack bass at all....... As a matter of fact, the bass is quite punchy, tight, and tuneful. For my ears, the high end rolloff is compensated for by a glorious midrange that surpasses any IEM (and many full sized cans) I have. One listen to anything with guitars will convince you of their excellent sound quality. As for the soundstage, it is not nearly as "in-your-head" as Etys.
Hope this helps...............to drain your wallet a bit more.

yes, succumb to the lure of electrostatics

don't fight it, just let it encompass you in a whole nother level of sound

before soon you'll regret ever counting the dollars spend here...

but it will all have been worth it

hmmm....these aren't the responses that I was planning for. I actually figured everyone would say "The bass is the worst there and the highs roll off after 22Hz"....hah, that would've made my choices a lot easier. BUT...this would bring me into a new world of high fidelity...which I will gladly welcome any day.

My HD485s....they're modded so much, and are so crisp, translucent, orgarnic....I'm willing to throw them against any everyday phone short of the 650s, k701, or the 880s..... so the SR-001 seems like a super high candidate for my expensive hobby, and provide me with an excellent portable phone.

Comfort, I forgot to mention comfort is NOT an issue...I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but I've been able to wear anything without noticing it...like the shure e2 with the translucent tips. So now the rolling off highs are my only concern, but really that's not even a concern...

Let me think about it for another day or so. x_x

Don't forget:For just a few dollars (ho-ho) more you can have the SR-003 and SRM-252A which is the home version.

Would you say that they COULD be as dynamic as....dynamic drivers? Is there any fullsize can that these can be compared to that aren't ES? Fullsize dynamic cans are really the only thing I know well... so some sort of a comparison will help me....instantly decide if I want them or not. :p

No, they will never have the "slam" of a dynamic driver but it's much clearer and with better extension and texture. Personally I can't stand the dynamic bass because it isn't detailed enough and just thumps along but it's more of a preference thing then of ultimate performance.

Yeah I know what you mean. I guess I'll really just have to think about what I'm wanting...the warm tones...bass response of a pair of hd650s....or these. You guys have me leaning on these stax though- since I'd be dropping so much money in a amp for the senns.

I'm going to try and hold my tongue now...I have until Wednesday to buy, so I'll just watch this in case someone else has any other input for me. Thanks everyone

You'd be surprised at what the SR-001 can do, and even more so the SR-003. The bass is punchy, the mids are the best out there this side of the R10, there's plenty of detail, and soundstage can be pretty large, though it's source dependant. With a MicroDAC, for instance, you get just about no soundstage at all, while with some of my old vintage PCDP's the soundstage is quite large.

The SR-001 compares favorably to the HD650 when the latter is driven by mediocre gear. The SR-003 doesn't scale quite as well as the HD650, so with good gear the Senn will leave it behind. The SR-003 doesn't have the soundstage or the treble extension, or the bass slam for that matter, but it's a whole lot faster and has a better midrange on top of much cleaner bass.

For the record, I prefer the SR-003 driven by the SRM-007t to the HD650/Raptor combo, which I had for a few days to play around with. The latter combo is tenchically better than the former, but doesn't have the SR-003's romantic tone, lightning speed and plentiful clean, textured bass. That doesn't mean that either combo ranks very highly in my hierarchy...

I noticed that the SR-001 and 003 have removable cables....say I wanted to buy a BETTER amp later on for home use, are there 003 cables that I can put on the 001s?

Supposedly, yes. I would send an inquiry to EIFL, PriceJapan, or Audiocubes to see if they sell the things (or a local dealer).
