While everyone else is blathering on about iPod docks and such, I'm listening to my SqueezeBox Duet combination (controller+headless receiver). It's so nice...

Can it stream files with bit depth and sampling rates greater than 16/44.1 without undergoing sample rate (down)conversion?

Oops, forgot to mention I'm in the beta program. Lucky me, eh?

No, it can't do 96 kHz.

what's so nice about a SB3 with no display?

the remote is a nice convenience feature for the transporter, however.

It's $149. It also has linear regulators.

The whole thing is $149? Even the SB3 is $299 Try $399 - this is what it says on the slimdevices website.

I'll have to get one, put it through my Pace-Car reclocker and compare the ergonomics to my Sonos. Very well engineered, the Sonos. One advantage of the Duet is that you dont need to wire the first box to your LAN. It can be wireless.

The duet combo is $399, but the receiver alone is $149. It starts to make sense (relative to the SB3), if you want two or more receivers.

Controller + 2 receivers = $550
Controller + 3 receivers = $700

2 SB3 = $600
3 SB3 = $900

Equivalent Sonos System:

Controller + Wireless Bridge + 1 ZonePlayer 80 = $886
+ 2 ZonePlayer80 = $1235

That's a big difference.

I can say with the utmost assuredness that I never blather!

I have a Transporter in the livingroom. Would I be able to just get a controller for the bedroom, or is it true that the headphone feature isn't turned on?

I'll be intersted to read your impressions. I moved up from the SB to a TP and am lovingly listening to it right now.

Me too, WCA (West Coast Aaron)!

I'm getting my first dose of Anna Nalick.

I agree, it's a great value. Have you ever played with a Sonos controller? I have one and it's engineered superbly. How does this compare to the Duet remote?

I've moved the receiver into my main listening system for the beta testing program. I only use the digital output, so I'm not sure I can give you much help there. Maybe I will hook up the analog outputs just for fun (otherwise, I use my ezDAC exclusively these days). As far as ergonomics, the controller is a great little (well, not that little) device. It feels very solid. The display is high enough resolution that looking at cover art is useful. You can do pretty much everything from the controller that you can do using SqueezeCenter (formerly known as SlimServe). There's even a plugin to view lyrics on the controller, but I haven't quite figured out how to install the plugins yet (on the controller). Now I stay up at night playing with the controller, and just scrolling through my library (and internet radio stations) while laying in bed. I'm currently in a LDR, so no complaints from the SO, you know? Anyway, feel free to shoot over more questions. I think this duet combo will compete very well with Sonos, and make audiophile-quality multi-room systems possible even for those of us on limited budgets.

Oh, to answer the question about headphones, I tried the headphone jack on my controller, but nothing came out. The music streams from the server to the receiver (or SB3 or Transporter), but not directly to the controller. In theory, I don't see why this couldn't be added as a feature, though. Maybe that is in the works...After all, why have a headphone jack at all?

Hey, question... With any of the Slim Devices line can you add tag information and cover art to WAV files? I refuse to use lossless compression anymore (see current thread).

I'm not sure about WAV files, but I'm pretty sure you can do it with Flac. If you're talking about the thread I think you're talking about, you really need to understand that ripping and compression are two completely different tasks. The impression I get is that people aren't quite grasping this concept. If your rip is the same, there is no difference between any of the lossless formats. If the rip is not the same, then you need to determine the problem with your ripper - not the compression format.
