I personally preferred the sound of my Creative Gigaworks T20 to either 2.1 systems. You should check those out.

Are you kidding? AudioEngine 5 speakers actually sound good, not at all like computer speakers! They don't need a sub and are an excellent value. I carry mine in a bag all over the world when I travel. It makes for more luggage, but I really like them. They currently have over 40,000 miles on them too(1.5 times around the world), still perform flawlessly and have held up well cosmetically even through international airports. They are a solid purchase that should not just be limited to a computer!

Klipsch will send you a defective product and stiff you when you have a problem. I know everyone hates Bose headphone's including myself but I do have to say they have some 2.1 computer systems and they sound fantastic. Better than Creative and Logitech by far.

Active monitors are a good way to go but they do have a few disadvantages.

1. The amp is built into the speakers meaning you can't upgrade one with out upgrading the other (expensive). Also should something happen to the electronics in the speaker you are basically out of luck.

2. Monitors are designed for flat response first and foremost. Depending on your tastes and the type of music you listen to you may find the sound boring or dull.

You might want to take a look at smaller bookshelf speakers or even passive monitors + an integrated amp. KEF iQ3s + a Trends or Firestone Audio T amp would be a good choice.

You may also want to look at an external DAC or sound card upgrade if you want to get the most out of whatever speakers you decide to go with.
