The K1000, rated at 120 ohms, in parallel with the Vishay 8 ohm resistor would give about 7.5 ohms equivalent resistance at the speaker outputs.

but please consider that I have no technical knowledge. Let me change the question. Considering the information below, for use of an AKG K1000 at first (and later maybe a mySphere, but that's not relevant now), what are the ideal specifications of a resistor (Ohms, Watts, etc.)? Resistors in parallel.

I use 25watt 10 ohm in parallel across the speaker taps of my 30watt Claaa A amp to drive my Abyss Phi/CC.. No attenuation.. so hv to be very careful with the Volume knob
Alternatively i use the 2watt and 4 watt in series which would be very vlosr to yr 5 watt resistor.. I use 25watt power rating resistors so more overloaded margin. As always use with extreme caution on the volume knob esp for those with >>30 watt RMS per channwl speaker amplifers

The Sundara are pairing well with the Wadia 151PowerDAC mini (Class D, 25wpc/8 ohms), delivering an estimated 5-6wpc to the 37ohm Sundara.
Excellent separation and imaging, along with improved dynamics and finer sense of detail across the frequency spectrum.
Very comfortable listening level(s) with volume at 32/72.

I use the headphone out of my audiolab a6000 play. Has a built in dac and streamer.

Speaker taps power the Kef ls50 and headphone out my cans. Headphone out is extremely good and can power my HEDDphones without breaking a sweat. The ESS sabre implementation is very smooth and tames sibilant HPs like my T1.

Overall, a pleasant surprise! Do not need my burson anymore.

When I had the HEDDphone, I drove them with the speaker outputs from a Jeff Rowland Model 2 power amp through Endler Attenuators.
Don't know what the headphone out rating is for the Audiolab.
Headphone out on the Wyred4Sound not enough to drive the Sundara satisfactorily, IMHO.
Plan to try the headphone out from the bel canto C5i at some point, but for now the Wadia 151 is doing the best job I have heard so far at getting the most from the Sundara.

I was comparing my he9 to my elekit tu8600S lately. They have been trading blows in various respects. This is for HD800S, hd650 and atticus. But lately I connected arc ref 5se into pass x350.8 into hd800S. WOW. I didn't expect this... night and day difference. The soundstage sounds HUGE... more transparency, much better dynamics. Its like a different headphone (was using hd800S as I type this). Problem is the stack generates too much heat and its noisy on 800S. But man what an incredible sound. I don't get how hd800S scales this much. I am utterly confused.

This is a great thread. I just found it. I didn't think many folks used old school stereo amps to drive modern headphones. Well I do too. I'm using an old school dual-mono Sanyo JCX 2900K Stereo Receiver made in 1978. The damn thing weighs about 65 pounds. I have an RME ADI 2 DAC plugged into the Aux in, and I use a pair of HD600s plugged into the headphone output jack. The Sanyo is 140 WPC so I cannot get pass 9 o'clock on the volume knob before it's too loud for me. But i have never heard my HD600s sound so good. The bass that others can't seem to find, well I found it. And the great thing about the Sanyo is it has a built in parametric eq, and separate bass, treble and mids knobs. I think I paid $450 for this receiver a few years ago, and it was sitting in the garage until recently. I have a few nice headphone amplifiers, but for my high Ohm headphones, nothing beats the Sanyo.

Man Im listening to arc, pass and 800S right now and im getting chills. Its such an unbelievable mind blowing experience.

The Sanyo's preamp is feature-rich. But, RME ADI-2 includes a basic preamp component. Connecting it to the Sanyo's aux-in adds a second/redundant preamp in the signal path. Instead, try connecting to the Sanyo's power-in, bypassing its built-in preamp. You'll get cleaner sound and more transparency. You'll need to manage the volume from the RME as you'll forgo that control and other preamp features of the Sanyo.

Vintage receivers and integrated amps with modular preamp and amp sections can be versatile. I have those sections of my Pioneer SX-980 separately hooked up through a 4x2 RCA switch along with other separate preamps and amps. It's fun to create different signal paths, selectable by knobs, to drive headphones and speakers through various preamp/amp combinations. (I have a similar 2x2 switch to select between amps and speakers.)
