Hi !
i looked on ebay but i did not find any source for headphone drivers
i would like to know if you have some suggestions.
The only alternative would be to take them out from an existing model.

Another question.
Are you aware of some cheap models using decent quality drivers ?
Thanks a lot indeed.
Kind regards,  gino

I just ordered the 50mm Silk ones, seems good according the post above.
There are Aurvana Live replica's too.

Any (cheap) driver with at least 1000mW input power handling are decent, like I got these Pioneer SE-MJ711 with 40mm 1W drivers for DIY modding.

Hi !  and thank you very much indeed !
i searched a lot and i was not able to write the correct words to entry that page !
In a ideal world also the specs should be available
If not the selection is a little blind ...
I have to read carefully.
Thanks a lot again, gino

Just now I transplanted the excellent 50mm drivers from the ZX700 (headphone cup construction itself is a dissaster AM Radio Sounding designed!) into the SA3000.
They use share the same construction screw-on drivers, so it fit perfectly tuned into each other.
Im very happy now with the HIFi SQ without headamp, directly to laptop/DAP/keyboards/smartphone etc.

Ppl who said the unmodded ZX700 must be tonedeaf, they sounds like AM Radio mids fatigue to deaf!

ZX700 inside back.

Transplanted inside SA3000, Amazing SQ without extra headamp.

Hi thanks again and very very interesting project.
That theaches me something:
1)   even cheaper models can sport spectacular sounding drivers
2)   the construction of the HP also matters a lot.  the SA3000 are exceptional and clearly well designed and this contributes a lot, as the zx700 instead with the same drivers have a lower sound quality

Unfortunately the sa3000 are very expensive. By the way why did you modify them ?
So my idea would be
1)    select a pairs of drivers with excellent quality/price ratio
2)    realized the ear cups but much simpler ... let's say Grado style.

I still think that drivers make most of the sound.
And they are quite a mistery to me.
For instance if i am to build speakers i can find very very easily raw drivers and their FR and even distortion measurements.
Maybe out there a very cheap but very good drivers is available.
But as i said the idea would be to build something very simple.
I would build some ear cups prototype and listen to them without headband, and listen to them.
When i will find a decent sound to think to the headband,
But if i had a pair of sa3000 i hardly would touch them ... they are very expensive and very good as stock, i guess.
One think is to waste 20 USD of drivers ... another 500 USD of HP ...
Thanks again,  gino

Get the ZX701IP for $50 or even cheaper $18 refurbished=new returns or used, its the same as ZX700 with extra mic/iphone plug.
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DRZX701IP-Monitor-Headphones-iPhone/dp/B005MIIZ3E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1431429664&sr=1-1&keywords=zx701ip

They will sound very good but you must do mod the inside of cup and add 10 Ohms resistor to the center groundline to up the impedance to 34 Ohms (common designed audio standards are for 32 Ohms), this will make it less sensitive but better noisefloor and balanced SQ:
Cover/close the 3 front ports with felt to stop the reflecting mids and tape the inside cup with felt or wall crack repair tape to dampen the any soundwave reflections.

---
I transplanted the SA3000 drivers into my SA5000, which 1 original driver was blowned up.
Now the SA3000 fixed with the ZX700 drivers, next fix the ZX700 with those ordered 50mm Silk drivers and do the ZX700 modding to have another decent hp.

Dampening the inside the cups will improve and fix any fatigue SQ caused by lack of dampening and wrong design to hear the true max potential of the driver's SQ and class upgrades:
I'd done mods to the SA5000 and it fixed the pierching treble tremediously and its sounds now real lifelike, will do these easy cheap mods to any hp from now on.

Unmodded SA5000/SA3000/ZX700 are all bad with fatigue SQ caused by inner soundwave reflections!

thanks a lot again for the very interesting advice.  maybe i am just deluded but i was thinking even to build the ear cups adapting something that can be found around.  I was looking to aluminum cups used to make little cakes even

ok ! now i understand so uou needed new drivers for the 3000.  Both are a very interesting concept, They look like star trek Hps indeed.  I am sure they sound fantastic.

this is extremely interesting. I think that this is maybe the reason because some open back HP, like Grado for instance sound so good ?  they have less back reflections between driver and cup ?
My plan is very simply at the point that maybe it is a silly plan.  Try to build just one complete assemblage of driver, ear cup and cushion ... an listen keeping this prototype on the ear with a hand.  Unfortunately i do not have access to instruments useful to measure FR, distortion, response to signals and so on.   When i will listen a good sound the problem will be to build a decent headband to keep everyhting in place.
Maybe i am just dreaming.  What you think ? better to mod someting existent ?  thanks alot again for the very valuable advice.
P.S. i would like to add a comment.   If i had one HP like yours ... or the 5000 or the3000 i will stop sure to own something spectacular.  To improve on them i think it is almost impossible.
Kind regards,  gino
