I have never owned a pair of IEMs, but own a few pairs of very good fullsized cans. I own RS1, SR60, SR125, ATH-ESW9, ATH-EW9, HD600. So this is my experience of headphones.

How does the general sonic experience of high quality IEMs differ to that of good headphones. For example rated IEMs such as SE530, UE-10 triple fi, UE10 etc

for one thing... they wont have any soundstage at all. I put on my k701 and then i put on a few pairs of IEMS... the iems are very frontal.

This might not really answer your question, but I just bought a pair of UE 10 Pro's. I was thinking of getting the flavour of the month, the Ultrasone 780's recabled, as they would be a good pair of cans for portability, however I noticed much of what I wanted in a pair of phones in my UE 5's so I grabbed a pair of 10's. So far, after only a bit of listening with them, despite the obvious consequences of sound being fired directly into my ear canals, the main difference for me has been the radically different EQ, similar to my UE 5's. The level of detail and separation feel more on par with a much cheaper set of full-size cans though, especially compared to my current re-cabled K701's.
