Hi all, I'm new here...but have been trolling for a week or so because my account didn't get activated for some reason.

Here's my question, I currently have a pair of SR-80's that I've owned for almost a year now. I really love the "grado sound", and when I try to listen to most other headphones they sound cold and not as warm as the Grado's. The problem is that I need a headphone that I can take outside, listen to in class, in a car with other people, etc. The sound leakage has been a major problem in these situations, rendering them unacceptable for this kind of use. I'm looking for something portable, closed I suppose since I don't want any leakage, that most closley reproduces that "grado sound" if that makes any sense. Looking to spend under $200, but make any suggestion that you might think is relevant. I will also be using an amp. Thank you.

are you looking to spend WAY under 200? get the Koss KSC-35 earclips, i am not joking. For $29 off the koss website, it's a steal. Considered to be "mini-grados" this open design and bouncy bass loving can has full sized drivers clipped flush with your ear. Try them out, you won't be disappointed! *takes some commission from the koss rep behind him*

Only problem with those is that I was looking for something closed, because I will be using these in environments where I can't have sound leakage. These appear to be open?

you have just described the HD 25-1 sound signature.
It is THE only Senn I can listen to. Very nice cans.
Mine are coming soon and then the fun begins.

Agreed. Grado-esque sonic signature, closed, and very durable. $149 at spysupply007.com and samedaymusic.com price matches if you want to go with an online dealer with, IMO, great customer service.

The Sennheiser PX200 is relatively similar in sound signature to my SR60's, are closed, and are also compact. Mind you they're not Grados but they are lively and have a sweet midrange like Grados and bass that's pretty deep but that doesn't take over the sound. The biggest difference between the two is probably in the highs, since the PX200 rolls off the highs a little and Grado cans tend to be flat through the trebles if not a little boosted. Of course they also sound a lot more closed sounding than Grados, but then, they are closed...

yeah i agreed for closed headphone, the PX200 is the choice.. but do not expect good isolation.. for better isolation the panasonic in ear bud or sharp MD33 is better

You'll have the same sound leakage problem with the Ksc-35. Believe me because I used to own one but almost never used it due to previous reason. They sound excellent, especially considering the price but I couldn't find any use for an open headphones that is to be used portably.

About the HD 25-1: Sometimes I have a problem with recommending the HD 25-1 due to its idiosyncratic sound signature (i.e. very gradoesque) but since you're actually asking for this distinct grado sound, the HD 25 definately is worthy of a consideration. The HD 25 is a bit more neutral than the grados, you could say less coloured or more dry sounding than the grados, whatever you like. Further, the HD 25 is very sensitive which renders the use of a dedicated headphone not entirely useless but it won't be mandatory either, as is the case with various other headphones in the same league.

Other than the HD 25-1 I can't really thing of another non-grado headphone that sounds like one.

if you can find an AT a100ti, it sounded almost exactly like an sr80 with bowl pads.

EDIT Ok, exactly is a little strong of a word. I would say that they both had an upfront soundstage presentation, prominent midrange, vibrant highs, and lean bass.
