is there a way to figure out how much juice your sound card can deliver?, so whether or not a particular headphone will be good or need an amp?

well, I can tell you that most every soundcard on the market will give you a rough line level signal via its opamp, some will handle high impedances better than others, and none of them will do polite things with truly hi-fi headphones

perhaps if you gave us some example of the equipment you're using, or intend to use, instead of treating it like a matter of national security, we might be able to give you some advice

lolz..my comp is a standard AMD athlon 3500+ with MSI K8N Diamond, and im currently using onboard sound. the PSU unit is 550Watts. it says "SB Audigy" on my device manager when i look up my sound card.

i was asking the question since i just wanted to know how high up this think can be cranked up, i was considering getting a HD600 but i am very doubtful this thing will have enough juice...so i was tryin to find out a way if i could find out how far it wud go.

alright, looks like you have Audigy SE integrated on that mainboard (not bad at all for integrated audio)

honestly, it'll struggle with the HD 600's, in the sense that the low end will drop off faster/harder than it should (very likely), and you might percieve a lack of "detail" or "emotion" (which is likely just a lack of even output volume)

do you have any budget for an amplifier, in addition to the HD 600's?

i wasnt sure which phones i wanted to go for actually. and its still confusing me,

that thread is where i asked about what i shoudl go for..but im still iffy bout what i should do.

the australian government is giving 900 big ones to everyone..and i have to check if im eligible if that happens then yes ill probably have spare change for an amp..which was thinking WA6..unless there are better ones for the price?

that, kinda sucks
to be honest

in that case, I'd say try the HD 600's and pick out an amp, unless you're reading on something else that suits you better, although personally, I feel the HD 600's are a very good "entry point" (Denon D2000's being another good "entry point")

amplifier wise, I don't know much about tubes, as I enjoy SS from my reciever and discrete hp amp, so can't help you much there, other than to say that for HD 600's, you really should have an amplifier of some sort (just to handle the high impedance load presented)
