Sound Rhyme SR9 First Impressions:

I opened this up just about an hour ago. And I have to say, the stage size is amazing, that and of course the reason I love Hybrids so much.....the separation and itemization of elements apart from one another. Man...........just the full-on immersion going on here. :)

Clean..........yet holding that bass punch, still not interfering with the mids. Treble is smooth and joined to a wide-midrange stage while enough brightness, still fairly reserved and poised here. I don't yet know how to describe it, except it is probably more lower mid-treble making a statement apart from high high sparkles. In a way this is unique and I like it, but unique in a fully natural way.........still different from anything I have heard before? :)

What this does is kind of do both a spacial placement, except it unifies the mids and treble, into a cohesive whole.........maybe because 8BAs?

The big thing truly is just the size of the bass statements here, they are not messing around at all, just giving to to you. Woody, a little dark and huge in size, while still leaving room for those lower midrange and mid-midrange elements.

I'm listening to an OST and the bass is actually rumbling, but in the best of ways, as there is low definition rumbling and high definition rumbling. This is high definition rumbling.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack to the film of the same name composed by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL.

I'm listening to the song "Tuesday" shown below!

Here I can totally see inside the bass stage like a tunnel that has deepness and emotion when the low notes hit. This is insanity really..............for this kind of money........unbelievable really. I seem to get IEMs to review that no one knows about, or the opposite, ones that everyone knows about.........and guess which one this is........yep one of the most popular girls in town........and I know why.........she puts out! Fit is something else too, just look at it, this is semi-custom done right!

96 kHz - 24 bit Sony WM1Z to included cable to Sound Rhyme SR9 to my favorite wide-bore ear-tips. This is amazing, man is it ever?

The new Sound Rhyme SR9:
If you have been around here long it is hard not to notice Sound Rhyme’s presence. Coming into noticeability back in February of 2023 when AmericanSpirit made a thread promoting the Sound Rhyme SR5. As such we meet-up with all the classic tell-tale signs of a Chinese made IEM. But more than that Sound Rhyme was at the start very much two things…..offering a noticeable value in relation to musicality per dollar spent, and a quirky slightly model renaming phenomenon of early models, just showing how much they cared about perfection. In my personal history I have heard 3 others besides this new SR9. Yep, I just reviewed a single full-range DD IEM called the Sound Rhyme SP-01. The SP-01 moves forward to really set the standard for the under $100.00 full-range DD monitor. Earlier I got a chance to review the SR5 and SR7.

Sound Rhyme Hybrids:

The SR7 was about adding name brand drivers and coming-up with a warm yet musically enticing sound that in some remote ways was a little like Penon/ISN house sound, especially with how the midrange was done.

The Sound Rhyme SR7:
Driver: 1DD+6BA
1 x 9.2mm dynamic driver
4 x Sonion Balanced Armature 26U
2 x Knowles Balanced Armature 33518

To where the price of the SR7 coming in at $369.00 really meant you were paying for those name brand drivers, yet due to the tune and technicality of the pure stage size the SR7 remains a value. But I bring this up so you can understand that a lot has happened in the IEM world since I reviewed the SR7. Namely custom drivers at times have gotten just that much better to warrant the use in a quality product like the SR9, and in-fact make the sound both fulfilling and a consistent value in relation to prior Sound Rhyme products.

The Sound Rhyme SR5:
Driver 1DD+4BA
10mm high polymer DD
Knowles ED29689 x2 (Mid)
Knowles 31736 composite tweeter x2 (Mid- High)

While really the SR5 put Sound Rhyme on the proverbial map here at Head-Fi, the company still moved forward to try new ideas and get a bigger sound, more involving bass footprint and intoxicating emotions. Sure to this day the SR5 is completely unique, offing a set of technicalities far above the simple asking price. In fact just the way the SR5 does Orchestral Music makes it a stone-cold classic……….still how can a company like Sound Rhyme stand still?

Build History:
$749.00 Sound Rhyme DTE900 4EST+ 4BA + 1DD Hybrid
$369.00 Sound Rhyme SR7 1DD+6BA Hybrid
$749.00 Sound Rhyme SR8 14BA
$59.00 Sound Rhyme SR1 Bass 9.2mm (Single Full-range Dynamic)
$459.00 Sound Rhyme DTE500 2EST+ 2BA + 1 Dynamic Driver Hybrid
$149.00 Sound Rhyme SR5 4BA + 1 Dynamic Driver Hybrid
$1,799.00 Sound Rhyme Prado EST 4EST+12BA Hybrid
$89.00 Sound Rhyme SP01 10mm Single full-range DD
$299.00 Sound Rhyme SR9 8mm DD + 4 mid BA and 4 treble BAs Hybrid

The SR9:
1 Liquid Silicone 8mm Dynamic Driver
4 Custom Composite BAs for the middle frequency
4 Custom Composite BAs for the high frequency

Brand:Sound Rhyme
Model: SR9
Driver: 1DD+8BA
Sensitivity: 110dB
Frequency response: 10Hz-40kHz
Impedance: 12.5Ω

In the coming review I will compare a few cables in use with the SR9. Namely Penon cables compared against the included cable.

Penon Pyramid:
Though I will say this now, playing around with both the ASOS+ and ASOS+X, the Penon Pyramid is truly gifted in what it does to actualize the full character of the SR9. After only 24 hours of burn-in I got a chance to really find-out what style of playback we have. Preliminary testing anyway. Using the Sony WM1A with MrWalkman’s software and my regular wide-bore silicone ear-tips. Here we are met with both a big stage but also in contrast to the regular included cable a farther throw of events. Now this expansion is so healthy due to somehow everything seemingly just where it is supposed to be? Where this cable creates a midrange luster with vocals that is both an item of vocal polish and both substantiation. As such big images fall out and gain just the right amount of separation from the rest of the instruments. Normally I have a preference for the ASOS+ or the ASOS+X with new IEMs to test, except this example of the SR coming alive, is such a treat I have to write about it and explain myself. There is an example of this airiness and positioning that is so natural and smooth yet bright enough, and way big, like the Penon Pyramid is making this IEM be the best it can be, right off the bat. Just so totally acceptable and involving how the Pyramid does its magic here.

Later in the actual review I will include examples of the following 4 cables in use.

AmericanSpirit reached out to me and told me to say hi to everyone :beerchug:

He had the Sound Rhyme SR9 since launch, and he had some issues with his unit. Turned out he had reversed BA polarity on his unit, and this can have affected more units.
He also told me the custom BAs need around 150hours to let the BA settle in, before that they can be a little grainy.

Doubt I did this long burn in myself, I might just let them run in more when I get it back from the tour. While I was critical I also praised it for being very fun, and have some epic bass with very good treble extension.

It pains me to put them on sale, but I just don't listen enough nowadays. Up for sale are my beloved SR8. :sob: TOTL sound at a midrange price.
I understand you, I love my DTE900 with all my daps and dongles but lately I got too many sets and I’m considering to explore more CANS so l listed it for sale and I’ll list other iems soon too🥲
