The touch SQ is definitely better than the classic through the HP out. Very clean, great sq across all freqs, uncolored, w/no real detectable static (unless using very sensitive IEM's). Very solid sq in the ipod lineup - only the nano 4g is supposed to be just about equal.

Hopefully someone will answer that for you, since you can see in my sig, I don't own a set of those GREAT IEM's.

From what I have heard and I can't remember exactly where, the classic uses a lower quality DAC. I have not listened to a classic personally so I can't tell you from first hand experience.

I don't really like the sound quality of the classic when I compare it to my Sansa Clip or 5g ipod video.... I wish I did but I don't.

I have the Classic 160gb and the 2nd Gen Touch 16gb. The difference is not night and day, but I prefer the sound of the touch with unamped Shure e3c headphones.

Either one is better (imho) than the 4, 5, or 5.5 gen ipod.
