I currently own the K501 and the HD580 and the K501 is just slightly thin and bright (loved it until I heard the HD580). The HD580 is just a little too bloated sounding (too much emphasis on the lower mids and bass). Both have wonderful spacing and presentation. I just need something right in between these two sound signatures. Any suggestions?

PS: I love the detail of both cans and require it.

Yup, what those guys said....or a replacement cable for the 580's. The Zu might clear things up a little on them. Of course it might be hard having a cable that costs more than your phones

I find the Audio-Technica to be closer to the middle ground than DT880...

Definitely DT880. Just make sure to get a straight-cable version. Coiled cords are annoying.

Perhaps the new AKG K601 or K701 may fill the bill. It'll be awhile before they're readily available. Meanwhile, how 'bout a Grado HP2?

Meier Audio already has them in their product lineup and expects them to be available in late October:

Another thumbs up for the DT880. I have both, HD580 and DT880 and found them to be excellent complementary cans. DT880 is very spacious, slightly treble heavy and very focused. My favorite cans so far..with the HD580 not far behind.

I had the HD650, K501, and DT880 all at the same time for a while. I loved them all. With stock cabling on them all, I'd have chosen the DT880. However, with the Equinox cable on the Senns, they moved handily ahead of the other two cans. For me, it was suddenly no contest at all, and I kept the 650s with the Equinox.

Of course that adds up fast... so out of the box, I'd also say DT880.

DT880 vote.

But really all three cans here, the K501/HD580/DT880 form a nice trinity of cans. I won't give any of them up.

But... what happens when you recable the DT880?
