I almost got a pair of front speakers and subwoofer too but he's keeping them incase he ever uses them.

Haha good stuff. What brand/model is it? It is generally not recommended to mix different speakers together. Might be ok though who knows.

So I had some time on my hands, and I figure hey, what the hell I might as well set up the receiver, so I took the speakers from the living room, and took my center, and set everything up on my desktop, I like it!

Buy a bigger desk. And don't block the Yamaha vent holes.

I'm getting a vertical stand for it, but for now i moved it off to the side it's fine now.

Okay so now i need a sub, for right now i'll be happy with 3.1, would that energy take sub go with the phase technology center and the paradigm mini's?

Mismatching the sub isn't really a big deal so it would do just fine. Consider getting the ESW-V10 .. not even $100 more than the V8 and its regular price is $800... Too much of a good deal to pass on, especially since you have the money for it now hehe.

Is that V10 the kind of sub I could keep for a while even if I upgrade the other speakers?

It's a very good sub.. The best Energy has to offer right now and the same one they pair with their RC-70 floorstanders.
