'Net filters "required" for all Australians, no opt-out

And yes, this blockage also includes "pornographic material inappropriate for children."

But seriously, I'm sorry for how those who reside in Australia are being forced to comply with this.

makes me think some USA agenda is pushing it to be initiated on other fronts so it seems less ridiculous by the time it's enforced on us

ugh

some good australians better do something about that.. it sounds as if the public was not given any option and i don't think that's really legal? at least not here it isn't

Actually, I suspect Big Bro is up in his room, surfing for pornography. The authorities who impose this kind of nonsense always seem to leave themselves an out.

I remember reading an interview with a senior figure of the Taliban in the days before the US invasion of Afghanistan. The interviewer pointed out that, as they were driving along in the cleric's SUV, he was blasting pop music out of the vehicle's sound system.

He apparantly chuckled and said something about needing to keep his eye on evil so he could protect his people from it. I bet he had quite a CD collection.

Point is, the cost of freedom is vigilance. Regulations like this have to be opposed. Not just by Australians, but by everyone.

P.S. This is too freakin funny! I originally used the word p*rn in my post, and the site filter replaced it with ****. Changed "****" to "pornography," and that passed muster. There is a Monty Python skit in there somewhere.

Ha, it reminds me of the recent news of how the NSA is abusing their wiretapping powers and are spending their time logging phone sex conversations. And seriously, what Al-Qaeda terrorist will speak English over the phone? It's absurd!

In a desperate attempt to prove that WMDs do exist, they have changed the acronym to "weopons of mass degeneracy."

Any skilled and savvy clandestine operative will always speak and write in the language of the country he or she has been assigned to.

You stand out less that way.

Yeah, I think that's one of the "buzzwords" that these forum censors looks for. I was reading a post on another forum and I couldn't figure out what **** meant. Then I realized that PØRN fit there. I really don't know why PØRN is censored yet pornography is not. What, we cannot even talk about it?

Back to the OP, this is Bull $hit. More proof that the whole "Big Brother" thing is upon us. WE must support Net Neutrality and this story needs to get more attention, especially in the US. It really surprises me that this DIDN'T start in the US, especially with PØRN, influenced the religious fanatics that want to control all aspects of everyone's private lives. The Constitution and rights in the US have already been pissed on so much I guess it's only a matter of time...

I was jokingly going to say maybe it's because Head-Fi was blocked already, but then I noticed your Location.

As amusing as this example is, it also points out the sheer futility of this kiind of automated filtering. If I can write "pornography," but not "p*rn," what does it accomplish? So we are left with a reduction in personal rights, which doesn't even accomplish what it sets out to.

This reminds me of the period when Napster (not the joke commercial version, the original) was still alive, but under attack. This was around 2000 or 2001, and the RIAA and their henchmen had begun trawling through the Napster listings to find instances of infringement. So people started posting files with slightly altered spelling of the filenames, and that worked just fine (Until they closed down Napster altogether, of course).

This sort of big-brotherism erodes the sacred notion of individual freedom, and it doesn't even provide the protections it seeks to. I'd call that a lose-lose.
