The MDR 7520 already has improved bass over the Z1000.

Either way, will be interesting what sound signature it ends up with. Hopefully something not U shaped as that is already covered by Fostex, Ultrasone Sig DJ among others.

The bass doesn't drop off as sharply on the 7520 but it does roll off and it is certainly not well controlled bass.

  My guess to Sony mdr-z7:
A coaxial driver with two transducers,
  A 50mm transducer with a carbon-plated liquid-crystal-polymer membrane,
  A 70mm ring-shaped bass transducer with a liquid-crystal-polymer membrane.
  Dual balanced driving.
  Unknown material in unknown back.

A coaxial driver with two transducer,
  A 40mm transducer with a liquid-crystal polymer membrane,
  A 65mm ring-shaped bass transducer with a liquid-crystal polymer membrane.
  Metal chamber in closed back.

Meh, looks like it isn't closed, but it isn't really open either.
I don't see the purpose of these designs. Either make full use of an open back or make it entirely closed so you actually feel like you have closed headphones on in the sense of decent isolation. These semi-open things never offer enough isolation for normal listening levels and don't sound as airy as normal open headphones.

Probably gonna cost around $3500, cause more expensive is better, right?

But yeah, maybe I judge too soon. Maybe Sony will surprise us.

Im hoping for a ma900 sound but with a little deeper bass, not sure if they are semi-open, they seem to have a large port on the bottom?

I just bought some K550 (tried the K551 at the same time and strangely they were very different, bass was much more blunt?), i need to start saving!
