Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

Yeah I know what you mean about the source. I would be driving them with a PHA-3 once I get one. Had one in the past and absolutely loved it...

At this point, shouldn't you just save up another 700 and get that new top of the line desktop DAC ? That one the one that starts with the TA- model number ?

Thing has insane specs.

Maybe you want the portability tho.

LOL no, as I have a PHA-3 lined up for $300. So I think I will scoop up that deal! Plus I do prefer to be able to take it with me places.

I think the Z7 is not a bad can.  It isn't as bad as some of the posts would lead you to believe.  However, against cans like the TH900, it is obvious where one stops and where the other begins.  The MDR-Z1R too.  Once again, price factor comes into play.

Is the TH-900 really worth it's current price point anymore tho ? 1,200... it looks very similar in build quality to the TH-600, except with the nice wood cups. One would assume tweaked driver... but you can also get that for 400 with the TH-X00 which also has an improved driver from the 600, and wood cups in exotic woods to boot.... which retails for what ... 6-800 ? I would be a bit disturbed if I was a TH-600 or 900 owner.

On the other hand, prices are falling across the board... HD700's at 450... HD800s at just under 1k at times... if you bought these just a few years ago you paid a lot more

I will get the Z7, just cannot afford a 2200 US Headhone made of paper and meshy wire, prefer $700 with metal cups)

the launch price is always expensive, i think price may drop to $1300-$1500 one year later.

Got my Z7's for under $400 used. Supremely comfortable, and superbly built. Maybe not a treble screamer, but with the name Fullranger I'm probably not as interested in the high tweeter zone as in a nice broad spectrum of sound.
EQ tweaks will let you tailor the sound. (See early posts on this thread for eq suggestions).
I run mine straight from the source and "deal" with the sound they deliver. Much, much better than my stereo setup. Can you say Amazing Bass for the buck? Yup!

Then there are the mods Whitigir can offer, plus better than stock cables to make them really shine.
I think I spent my money wisely on these, and they haven't been modded yet.

I got me a second pair after selling them in April. Have them on my head right now. Listen to some very modern Jazz from Switzerland with lots of bass instruments, piano and percussion. Here I really feel the bass with my unmodded Z7. This kind of music requires a very capable transducer. And the Z7 is one for me.

What amp do you guys pair the z7? Right now I am using dragonfly red and it really opened up the mids and removed the feeling that I once had wherein the bass overlaps with the mids.

PHA-3 with the Kimber Kable balanced. This is the recommended pairing for the Z7.
