I would agree with that, Im running my fingers over the headband now and it seems like its different but thats not a big deal. The ear cups are all that really matters.

Does anyone know why beeswax is preferred, there are a lot of other options

It's going to be on my skin, for one thing. And, being a natural non-toxic substance, is least likely to cause harm to the leather over time if used properly, IMHO. Beeswax has been used for leather conditioning and waterproofing for a very long time. I've got some stuff in my garage made for leather car interiors -- and that's where I use it. I prefer to stick to something a little less aggressive and 'formulated' when it comes to those very, very soft sheepskin earpads.

edit: FWIW we're talking a lot about the leather here, but I expect it'll be the memory foam that'll kick the bucket for me on these pads before the leather does, beeswax or not. Big noggin.

I need a good dac for the Z1R. I got a Schiit Gumby but it sounds brittle, dry, and lacking body. I listen to a lot of metal and rock and not necessarily good recordings. I need a dac that's more full bodied, liquid smooth, analog sounding, hard hitting bass, warm, etc.

Sony's TAZH1ES is the best with the Z1R, but it is pricey. I would look into this https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-airist-audio-r-2r-dac

I second the Sony TA-ZH1ES as a perfect match along with the Kimber AXIOS Cu balanced cable.

The Sony would be more like the Schitt Yaggy. @Boogie7910 What are you using for an amp?

I already have a Cavalli Liquid Gold amp and Forza Audioworks cables so only really interested in a different dac to replace the Gumby, like maybe a Chord or Audio-gd unless the dac in Sony TA-ZH1ES is worth the price alone.

I use the LAu and lately I’ve been using the Qutest by Chord Electronics. To me it’s very open and unconstrained. Using the Qutest it gets just a hair warmer and is really a sweet combo. Almost as good as using the DAVE (as a DAC only) and the LAu together.

Interesting, I haven't really looked at the Qutest. I'll have to check it out and especially if it's near DAVE caliber. Chord also has the Hugo TT 2 coming later this year so I'm wondering if I should wait to see how good that will be.

The Qutest is a dedicated DAC no amp. The Hugo TT2 is pretty sweet but is also an amp. So if you need a semi portable solution also the Hugo TT2 would be an appropriate choice. To be totally transparent I haven’t tried that combo since I’ve only had a chance now to demo the preproduction TT2 and from that little exposure I’m unable to come to a reasonable conclusion or opinion.

I was thinking about the TT2 because I really need a remote control for the volume otherwise I'd have to get a preamp with remote. Is the Qutest the same as the Hugo 2 just without the amp and batteries? Also are you using the Z1R's with the LAu and Qutest?

I third the TA-ZH1ES, add the Sony MUC-B20SB1 Headphone Cable 4.4mm Pentaconn 3.5mm .......and your pretty much all done. It’s the complete sound I have been looking for my whole life.

It’s exactly what your askIng for.

You should just get a chance to rotate one into your system. After the digital is converted to analog it’s put back into digital enveloped in a DSD remastering engine. I have not heard all the DACs, but it’s pretty good.

The Kimber AXIOS was another great suggestion, I have not heard the cable, but it’s pretty amazing how much of an improvement the Kimber cables offer. I can only imagine if it improves the sound from the stock cable, but to another degree past what the MUC-B20SB1 does.......then it may be something to try with the TA.

Cool, I really want to hear how it sounds. Everyone says it's really good with the Z1R. Also, what do you mean "I have not heard all the DAC"?.

  13. Redcarmoose
Meaning I simply have not heard very many top tier DACs over the years. So I can’t describe how the TA would be different or better than what’s out there. But.........from what I’ve heard the TA is special and has synergy with the Z1R that actually somewhat corrects it closer to perfect. As it’s obviously true........they were made for each other.

Yes the Qutest is the H2 DAC minus the amp stage. Yes I do occasionally use my Z1R’s with the LAu/Qutest combo. I actually prefer the sound of the Z1R/LAu/Qutest over the Sony ES amp but the Sony has some cool features.

I am using it with my Chord Mojo and I am very happy. Portable as well. Similar taste in music as well
