Hello,

I created this thread for keeping the forum up to date with any releases of custom firmware, and for having a place where we can share feedback.

I will keep this post updated with a list of current firmware mods.

The DMP-Z1 based firmware for 1A and 1Z, was released, as promised. It aims to bring a sound signature resembling the one of the DMP-Z1, much better than previous attempts (like tuning mods).

DMP-WM1

Features:
- sound signature resembling the one of the DMP-Z1, with awesome bass response and amazing soundstage holography and extension
- native DSD playback over the 3.5 mm output (available only for the 4.4 mm balanced port on the stock firmware)
- DSEE AI (present on DMP-Z1)
- progressive JPEG and interlaced PNG album covers are supported
- hardware accelerated rendition of the UI

Regarding the native DSD playback that is also available for the 3.5 mm output with this firmware, it means that the "Play DSD in Native Format" option from "Output Settings" will also apply for the 3.5 mm output when playing DSD. This means that no sound effects are being applied while this option is selected, exactly like with the 4.4 mm balanced port.

Installation:
1. Install DMP-WM1, and then close the installer
2. After that, install DMP-WM1_Ext_Tuning
3. Restart the player

To revert to the stock firmware:
1. Install StockRevert (DMP-WM1), and then close the installer
2. After that, install StockRevert_Ext_Tuning
3. Restart the player

For each one of the first steps, the player should restart and go into update mode, and the update bar on the player's screen should fill up till the end.

Feel free to share your feedback! :)

The firmware is available for downloading, here.

There will be versions of this for ZX300 and other players as well, but I still have to work a bit on them.

I will also update the WM1A 2.0 and the other 1.4 mods, so they will be available again after I'll update them (very soon).

Thanks!

Cool. Great place for custom firmware!

My sound tune firmware link is >> HERE
Recommend to update stock v3.02 first and then do the tune firmware. Don't forget to restart you Walkman after finished.

This is important for those who wondering how to get the actual 1A or 1Z sound signature back after try mod firmware.

Finish the back to stock process and then run the official v3.02 update (NW-WM1_V3.02.exe) four times (×4). You can do it continually after another and there is no need to unplug the cable until finished. After restart your Walkman, most of the thickness, harshness and brightness you hear before should be gone. And don't bother to do more than recommended because it doesn't make any difference. Try this solution many times today and it seem to work everytime. You may stay OEM or reapply any other firmware if you wish after that.

This is just an observation and solution. Not personal attack or any kind. I do believe in both mod firmware and sound tune firmware. :v:

I don't know what will become of the old thread, perhaps it had already run it's course, but I'm thrilled you started this thread. I think towards the end your mods were the most value I got out of it anyway - onwards and upwards.

Well, it will remain as a place to discuss any other things related to the players. Let's not talk about it here, to avoid any kind of issue. Thanks :)

DMP-WM1

Amazing work in forwarding the viability of the WM1A/Z platform!!!

To me, that bass and that soundstage holography and extension is just amazing!
Ditto. Exactly what I am and was experiencing for about 10 days since I started testing this. And the addition of native DSD over 3.5mm is awesome as well. The difference can be heard with an immediate AB test. Bass becomes more visceral and much more defined and dsd files now sounds a bit louder than before. This is probably due to the fact that the dsd now doesn’t have to down convert to PCM anymore and hence the full resolution and volume being heard better over 3.5mm. Brilliant breakthrough by @MrWalkman

You'll benefit from this no doubt using your K5 Pro?
