I just received one of these units (refrubished) which I bought directly from Sony. I know that when you move/ship cd-players you are supposed to lock the mechanism.

Th instruction book that came with the unit does not mention how to lock or un-lock it. On the bottom plate there is a plastic screw with OP on one side and EX on the other. It arrived with the screw pointing to EX.

I can assume that OP means "operate" but I know what you become if you ass-ume.

So does anyone here care to help me out. Thanks.

The last few CD players I have owned had no locking mechanism.

As far as I can recall, when my son got his CE595, we didn't do anything to unlock the transport or the changer mechanism, but I could be wrong.....

Your are correct, after 45 minutes with various Sony "Specialist" that was the outcome. The screw on the bottom with the OP and EX markings are for unlocking the tray should it get locked.

The tray rests on 4 springs, one placed in each corner of the tray mechanism.
If you turn the screw in one position, it PULLS down the tray so that the springs do not bounce the tray up and down during transport. OP means OPerate, EX means EXport. Some units will work in the OP position, but if you use it in this position you are going to get an increase in jitter and tracking errors.
One quick way to check: put a disc in and play it. Then slightly tap the front of the CD player with your hand and see if it skips. It should skip in the EX position, and play OK in the OP position.

Did you mean EX position here? Just checking...

Well, I finally got around setting it up and I am very disapointed. The unit will start playing and it will stop randomly. When it does that none of the buttons on the player or the remote do anything except the on/off on the unit. After being powered off it will play but it will stop randomly again.

I went to Sony's website and followed the instruction provided, then I called their service center and followed aditional guidelines to no avail. Now I have to return the unit so they can issue a credit in one to two billing cycles. At which time I could re-order.

Meanwhile I am waiting for the supervisor to contact me because I requested a prepaid return label. The supervisor has to make that call and contact me even thought the unit is not working correctly (DOA as far as I am concerned).

I also asked to be sent a replacement unit with a prepaid return label inside for the damaged unit and Sony declined. As stated above I am waiting for the supervisor's call.

One thing is for sure, no more Sony products for me.
