Hi,

Currently i am a proud owner of the Sony S639F DAP but I have been reading that the Sony A829 has better sound quality and wider soundstage than the Sony S639F. Is this true?

Also, I have read that the Sony A829 has a built in mic for voice recording.

Please advise

I have a Sony A829 but not S639F, so can't tell you if ones SQ is better than the other, but I can tell you A829 have no mic for recording, it's just a player, not recorder.

The S639 is more neutral and brighter than the 829.

The 829 does indeed have a bigger soundstage, and sounds warmer than the 808/818/639 in my opinion.

Agreed from memory. I'll be able to testify anew soon, however, as I've recieved my S739 yesterday (havn't yet put any music on it though)! I decided on that at the expense of the upcoming X1000 from Sony, as bells and whistles of a touchscreen DAP with Wifi etc are not something I really need or desire or wouold have much use for and, so, at the price I was able to pick up the S739 up for, I thought, that, with my A829, would be a satisfactory alternative to a 32GB X1000.

Thanks for the replies.

I might wait for the x1000 and see if the SQ is better than the 639F but the A829 does look promising if it has bigger soundstage and sounds warmer.

Cheers

Get a resistor/impedance adaptor (also known as an attenuator); depending upon Ohmage value, hiss will be reduced significantly to completely eliminated. I use an 120 Ohm plug-type and hiss is totally absent. I believe 75 Ohms would do the trick, however.

i have used 75ohm on it and i still hiss with audio technica phones but not with phonak phones. this is the only area that i am unhappy with regarding the older sony players. i could do with a bit more soundstage but they are overall, excellent sounding players.

Yes, when the EQ is disabled. But when enabled, both hiss the same

Just wanted to say that I've had a brief listen to my Sony NWZ-S739 and the initial impressions are what I felt before, with the S639 in that case, echoing Soozieq's sentiments also; great sound but not quite as big, warm and robust as that delivered from the A-829. I like it's liquid neutrality, however. Very serene and cool.

Since soozieq and BloodSugar00 say that the A829 has a better soundstage and warmer SQ, it has made me even more tempted and I have finally decided to go ahead and try one out. Also the ability to change the T and B setting in the service mode which was impossible on the S639F is a great bonus.

Cheers
