Has anyone tried the Sony S or E series? I was wondering if anyone has tried or has any of these. If so, what are your thoughts?

there are varying reviews, sound quality wise both are quite good and I believe both use the same internals except the S has a bigger screen.
Since you are in north america the only functional differences between the S and E are:
-S has voice and FM recording
-speakers but then some revies say they are poor, others say they are good but lack bass
-S has a bigger screen, 2.4in vs 2.0 on the E.
-higher price on S
if you just need a good player for sound then get the E at 16gb, if you need FM and vouce recording grab the S.

I will go with the S being I have the older generation with the 2.4. I don't really care how the speakers sound.
Do the speaker in the S mute when headphones are plugged in?

you actually select the output on the side, either headphones or speakers, can't be both, it is a switch like for bluetooth or hold.
