Sony PCM M10 as portable player?
May 15, 2014 at 10:41 PM Post #226 of 250
Ok - I just got a M10 and this memory card (samsung evo sdxc - http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Adapter-MB-MP64DA-AM/dp/B00IVPU7AO/ref=pd_cp_pc_2)

Can I just drop the card in my macbook pro (2013) - format it as "MS file system" and use it in the recorder?  It would seem that is implied at the end of this thread or do I need to us a specialized format utility.  I used to us my d100 a lot and am running HEBs (DPA 4061???- they are about 12 years old) with the battery box into line in set at low/no limiter/no LPF/24bit48K.  I'll be taping either front of stage or at the stacks for best sound/least crowd noise.

I can't do a test run with this at a real show as the concert is tomorrow nite, I'm anal, and want to make sure everything is set-up as completely as possible.

Thanks in advance,
Will

Sony PCM-M10 Line Out > OPPO HA-2 > OPPO PM-1

(OPPO HA-2 prototype - the released version might be different)

Nice!
I'm intrigued with their closed-back PM3...
Did you ever try the new Sony PCM recorder?

No, too much moola... In addition to my trusty 4-year old M10, I also use Line Out or Coaxial Out from a FiiO X5 as both a portable and Desktop transport.

Oh yeah, forgot you had the X5 as well! :)

sorry posting in this fairly old thread but i was interested in buying an m10 - i currently use a minidisc player to record for work (mz rh1) -but want to get something more functional . i also wanted to now about the m10 as  a DAP ive seen mixed reviews about the sound quality - something about a sigma delta dac, If you still have one can you  comment on the sound quality versus the x5 and modern Hires players. thanks

I used the M10 as my DAP with LIne Out to portable amps for over three years, having replaced it with the FiiO X5 - also used via Line Out to portable amps that are superior to the X5's amp.

The Sony's DAC is thin, a little bright (great for LCD-2 and PM-1, when using a neutral and transparent amp), but also just a wee bit grainy (not good for highly resolving amps and headphones).

The FiiO X5's PCM1592A DAC is spectacularly good - the best thing about the X5 is its DAC - slightly on the warm side of neutral, very transparent and resolving, better than any Sabre DAC I've heard. I prefer using the X5's Line Out to the OPPO HA-1 amp section over using the X5's Coax Out to the OPPO HA-1s ESS9018 DAC. I consider the FiiO X5's to be my favorite DAC other than the $1200 NOS Metrum Octave MkII. The X5's DAC is definitely my favorite oversampling DAC of everything I currently own or have owned.

This is my current "portable" rig of choice:

FiiO X5 Line Out > Meier Stepdance > OPPO PM-1

Two battery packs provide 5V for the FiiO X5 and a regulated 15V for the Stepdance.

Still, if I were interested in using the Sony PCM-M10 as both a recorder and a DAP, I wouldn't hesitate to combine it with something like the Stepdance (or the newer QuickStep) and a warm headphone (the Sennheiser Amperior, for example.)

I have one. It is a stellar recorder, functional as a DAP. I always end up using my iPhone as my DAP. If I need good quality recording, I grab the M10.

The PCM-M10's HO doesn't lack detail. It lacks power. You'll have to use your most efficient IEMs in the absence of an external amp.

Hi there,

Mike, thank you for all the posts you've been writing about this Sony product. Just two questions:

- where was your unit built and has an aluminium housing? (at the reviews i came across, from the pictures of the back of the unuit it states: Made in China)
- could you compare this unit's headphone out section to other DAPs from the Sony Walkman range (is it weaker, equal, more powerful)?

Thank you for your input.

Hi there,

- could you compare this unit's headphone out section to other DAPs from the Sony Walkman range (is it weaker, equal, more powerful)?

Mine was made in China, too.

At 20mW into 16-Ohms, the PCM-M10 headphone out offers exactly twice as much power as the currently popular Sony NWZ-A17 (DAP), for example (with only 10mW into 16-Ohms).  Both can play an efficient headphone "loudly."  But the amp section that has more power will offer greater bass control, dynamics, and possibly even bass extension, on a headphone or IEM that needs more power to reach its best possible performance.  Even my relatively inefficient Audeze LCD-2 planar magnetic headphones play "loudly enough" when directly connected to the PCM-M10 headphone out, but the bass is woolly and uncontrolled, and there's just not enough "oomph" left in the amp to respond with authority when the DAC calls for an instantaneous, momentary burst of power, as with a hard snare drum hit.

That's why, for over 3 years, I used the PCM-M10's Line Out to a portable amp (such as the iBasso PB2, pictured here - which, with the op-amps I use, delivers about 1000mW rms per channel) for inefficient headphones like the LCD-2 rev.1.

Even more much more efficient headphones, like the OPPO PM-1, scale well to additional power - for improved dynamics and bass control - again using the Line Out, here to drive OPPO's HA-2, rated at 220 mW into 32-Ohms):

In the end, 20mW might as well be 10mW, unless you've selected some really efficient IEMs or headphones for direct connection to the PCM-M10's headphone out.  Sure, it can be "loud enough," but if your intent is to really enjoy listening to music with the PCM-M10 in the absence of an external amp, not just to monitor recordings or check recordings in the field or studio, you'll want the most efficient headphones you can find.

Update:  I checked your profile - I think your Sony MDR-EX50 IEMs would be a good choice.  Being made by Sony, they are designed to work with Sony's low-power DAPs - where 20mW might actually be appreciated over 10mW.
