I just noticed that the power output on the EU model is incredibly low and I am wondering if it's really just all software or if there is also a hardware change in it (along with the destination cap), we would need to compare an uncapped EU to an international model to be sure, looking at the specs on Sony's website the limit is incredibly restrictive

International/Japan/US model:
Headphone Out (Stereo mini-jack)
MAXIMUM POWER OUTPUT (JEITA 16Ω/MW)
50 mW + 50 mW (High Gain)
Headphone Out (Balanced standard-jack)
MPEG4
200 mW + 200 mW (High Gain)

EU Model (no, these numbers aren't typos!):

Headphone Out (Stereo mini-jack)
MAXIMUM POWER OUTPUT (JEITA 16Ω/MW)
1.6-4.2mW
Headphone Out (Balanced standard-jack)
MPEG4
1.6-4.2mW

You can check the numbers yourself on Sony's page here:
https://www.sony.com/electronics/walkman/nw-zx300/specifications
https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/walkman/nw-zx300/specifications

I initially thought EU law makers don't know about impedance, but after reviewing the law, all it says is headphones cannot output over 85db (I am not sure how they intent to enforce this on analog devices but whatever), it seems Sony engineers didn't care, thought "screw it" and made sure the power output was so low that most pair of headphones in existence could ever reach a 85db level (which, to be honest is plainly stupid, but that's how they did it, go figure).

Either way, I am surprised software alone can set such a restrictive cap to the analog outputs and I wonder if they might not have made slight changes to the board itself.

Instructions at the end say "you must reset the device settings on the device to get the modification applied." How can you do this if you can't read the Japanese menu items to get to the reset option?

press and hold the power button until the ZX300 turns off.

So for those who have handle/seen both, Black or Silver? Does the black coating look durable and resistant to scratches ?

No problem with the Black, it's just the same as what is on the Zx2 and the WM1A.

Need to ask for someone to test their ZX300, play a file, then pause it, turn the volume all the way up, whiles you turn the volume down, can you hear the volume ticking down.

Thanks

I'm SO tempted to buy the ZX300, but after the new 2.0 firmware just came for the WM1A, I just can't justify spending money on another DAP although I use the WM1A at home, and the ZX300 would be my "on-the-go" DAP. But I think I'll have to settle with music from my phone on the go :) Or bring along the WM1A.

how is wm1a with the new FW ? is the sound 'better' now ?

Another UK-based Mac user here... I’ve been eyeing the ZX300 with interest, but this thread is slowly putting me off it.

I noticed in the firmware update for Mac instructions posted earlier, that it says to 'transfer all data from the unit to the computer' before doing so... Does this mean you'd potentially have to decant all 64GB of a full internal memory, then reload it after the update? Seems ridiculous - and further confused by mention of an 'automatic update function' elsewhere. How would this be achieved with no wi-fi connectivity?

I'd initially thought the ZX300 not being Android-based would be a good thing (the 'Android File Transfer' app for Mac is a glitchy, temperamental beast), but that's not looking to be the case.

Keen to hear more about how Mac-friendly this device is... & more impressions of it's performance next to other DAPs.

I didn't even bother to read all the instructions, but now I've looked and it says the exact same thing for Windows users.

I haven't lost anything. It's just a standard warning for the few times that something goes wrong, to avoid culpability. Like the sign at concerts saying 'We're not responsible for any lost or stolen items' =)

I wouldn't worry too much. (but if you lose your files, don't blame me lol)
