I've got my eye on this DAP. Is it capable of driving more difficult cans? Say an HD650 or 250ohm DT880? I just bought the 16ohm MDR-1AM2 and they've got me wondering what even is the point of hard to drive cans...but nonetheless I do own a pair of hard to drive cans..so the question stands.

The balanced output would definitelly drive sufficiently both HD650 and DT880, the problem is that DT880 needs to be modded to take balanced cable. On SE DT880 is still more than loud enough for me but it feels like wasting potential of zx300 to ise SE.
Many might disagree here but, In my opinion it would be very dificult to find headphones such that balanced out will not be able to drive properly. I never, never turn volume higher than 100/120 on my AKG k702 which is harder to drive than DT880 250ohm, despite having lower impedance.

Yes on HG, most of the loudness war victim songs are perfectly loud even at 75 but for quieter, more dynamic tracks I need to push volume above 90 on HG.

I use the zx300 with the HD6xx using a balanced connector in high gain. The dap provides more than enough volume for my comfort and the HD6xx sound great on it. However, I haven’t used the HD6xx with a more powerful amp so I’m not sure if it drives them properly as I understand the HD6xx have a wide impedance variation; specially towards the lower frequencies. Maybe somebody who has compared them using the zx300 and a more powerful desktop amp can provide more details!
I listen to my between 80 and 95 using high gain on the balanced output of the zx300.
I also use the HD58x and they do sound a bit louder than the HD6xx on the zx300 but not much more!
Thanks for the replies my dudes. Is there a place to score this DAP for the "cheap"? Maybe a site selling refurbs? I would love to score this thing for around $400. As sweet as this Sony is, I can't seem to locate the perfect DAP. I just got an Activo CT10, I'm quite pleased with the SQ of the DAP. I adore the Tidal MQA streaming too. The only knock I have against the CT10 is that it can't download Tidal tracks for offline use. How do you guys rate this Sony against say the Onkyo DP-X1A? The Pioneer 300? Other DAPs in this price range or sub 1K?
Guys, just out of curiosity, I have a question especially for those who use overhead cans with zx300.
Can you briefly share your experience if you prefer low gain or high gain and why?
I have been switching back and forth between HG and LG since i got zx300 and even before, on other devices I was doing the same and still can not decide which one I prefer, both sounds very different from each other though. Technically low gain should give the cleanest undistorted sound but in practice it isnt that srltraightforward.
