SE846 are high end and still love mine 2 years on.

The SE846 does sound noticeably better over balanced, as do my HD660S

Thanks psikey, can you tell me then, did you switch the SE846's removable "sleeve" to the "balanced sleeve" when using with the balanced output on the ZX300? or does it not really matter which of the three provided sleeves you have on there?
  3. Bepli
Pretty easy, most headphones dont scale with better quality outputs that much, most do scale with more power tho. The SE846 is very efficient so jeah it wont improve that much compared to other headphones. (will still sound better tho)
  4. Bepli
Most will be psycho acoustics tho, measurements show that most headphones change a very little only.
  5. psikey
Do you mean the inserts? I've never changed from the colour it came with.
  6. JerryHead
I think I get what you're saying.. The SE846s are already very efficient, even in the 3.5" output, so there's a fair chance the sound quality won't be all that much better out of the balanced output, but maybe a bit more with the added power(?)
  7. psikey
All I know is what my ears detect. Separation, space, solidity of sound all improved.
  8. Bepli
not efficient in terms of sq of the output but the power. They dont need alot of power to sound there best, so they only improve with a bit better output
  9. JerryHead
Yes, that's right, the inserts, which looks like tiny tubes.. I think one is called, "standard," another "balanced," and another something like "brilliant", (or something like that).. If you never changed yours, it's the standard one that comes with it. So I guess it really doesn't matter..

The insert doesn't mean balanced as in connection method, it' regarding sound signature so emphasis on lows, highs or balanced across the range.
  11. JerryHead
So I guess it's pretty subjective as to which sounds best, regardless of type of output(?) Any of three can sound best in either output depending on what your particular ear likes? I thought maybe the "balanced" sleeve was optimized for balanced sound..

My MQA files say MQA. File extension includes .MQA

psikey, you don't need to buy an additional special cable to get balanced sound with your Sennheiser HD 660s, do you?
  14. psikey
No, comes with a 4.4mm balanced cable.

I have a 4.4mm Sony Kimber Balanced for my SE846's but also have used a cheap Fiio 2.5mm balanced cable with a 4.4mm to 2.5mm adapter.

Tidal MQA streaming still sounds best with my Dragonfly Red on PC rather than using ZX300 as DAC with Tidal PC as the DFR renders the full MQA stream via Tidal PC.

Just listening to Seal - Standards (Deluxe) Master album as I type and fantastic with DFR/HD660S. Volume only 30% on PC too. DFR drives HD660S much better than ZX300 but still good enough with ZX300 via balanced (though need max volume with some classical). SE846's sound awesome via DFR & ZX300 (actually SE846's have less background hiss with ZX300 than the DFR but that is extremely low too).

Can you compare the Sennheiser HD 650s with the new HD660S? Much of a difference between the two?
