Is it possible to browse through music in a folder-tree type view on the sony, or is just the typical artist/genre/etc. type method of browsing? Also is the sony a good match for the Shure e4s? Since I already have the Shures, I want to find a DAP that will synergize well with them.

No, you can't browse by folder tree, only by artist/album/group/playlist etc.

like what h-man said, it is tag-based browsing, so folder-based is not possible. it works very well with e4c. the hd5 is bassy in nature, so it compensates for the bass-light e4c really well, without sounding boomy.
