I have a chance to get one of these in silver, mint condition for $160. I've had the R900, R90, R50 and R55. What can I expect as far as improvements from the R900, sound quality wise and practicality wise? I know that they did the R910 just after the R909, but at the price I can get the R909 for, I'd rather go for it (cheapest I've seen the R910 is around $239).

thanks!

compared to the r900, theres just a couple of improvements:
three line screen for easy menus.
jog-wheel is great too, easy for doing titles and browsing through tracks during playback.
group function, really usefull if you have multiple allbums on a disc
type R Atrac, just the slightest boost in quality on the recording side of things
easy manual recording adjustment during recording (but you have to turn it on everytime...)
and you don't need to use End Search anymore (it's still there tho)

basically, I thought it was a brilliant unit. well buit and solid, although the assembly did have a couple of gaps, mainly between the aluminium shell and the plastic ridge around the unit.

The MZ-R909 is a forgotten classic among new MD recorders. Comparing it to the R910 (I have both), the former seems more solid due to its aluminum body, but both units are well made. The true jog dial (like the R50) is a nice touch, plus the ability to record on-the-fly is much appreciated.

The $160 USD price is very good if it's truly in mint condition. One big plus is that I rarely hear about R909 failures, although the unit's been out for almost two years.

I had the R900 and the R909 in the past. The R909 is not as pretty as the 900, but otherwise I think that Braver's comments above are my exact thoughts on the R909. For $160 its well worth it.
