Sony MDR-Z7 Upgrades and Mods Thread

Again, big thanks to Whitigir, tokyoskies and others for putting crazy (Mad Scientist) kinds of ideas in my head
biggrin.gif

So I went ahead and put the Z7 under the knife.. Again..
To my surprise it wasn't all that bad and the operation went rather smoothly.

After removing the Center Filters I decided now was a good time to try out the Pad Spacer Mod.
I choose some thick leather for my "Half Baked" attempt.
From start to finish it took about 20min for both Filter and Pad modifications.

I sat back and had a listen and quickly noticed the intense acoustic detail and laser precision treble.
It was like adding a couple Ferrofluid Titanium Tweeters to the mix.

With a frequency range of 4hz-100khz it was like opening up a Gateway to the Ultrasonic unknown..
For me and my girly baby ears it was to much!!
( probably cause my hearing has been though hell and back - loud jobs, loud cars exe. )

It sounded great but the UN-hearable Ultra highs was like listening to Laser beams.

So I whipped up some filters.
Since we all, already have 3M Mircopore Tape and ease of use I decided to go that route.

I tried 3M Durapore as well, but for now my sweet spot is a Double stack of Micropore.

The nice thing about using the Tape is

It's cheap.

You can make 100's of filters per roll.

You can make pretty much what ever size and shape you want.

The tape filters are removable, so you can pop them on and off depending on your listening mood.

You can layer or "Stack" the filters to fine tune your acrostic preference.

..And you can add color.

I suck at this "how to" stuff. and my writing is riddled with errors, I'm sure.
But anyways I will try and add a short tutorial if anyone is going down the same path.

I'm really enjoying it. :)

It's brighter with a little more sparkle to treble.

Slight improvement to sound staging with a little more air to the feel of it.

Vocals seemed to have smoothed out a even more. Vocals more forward.

Slightly improved bass response.

Laser beams are gone. x-D

Side note:

The original Filter are well built and pretty durable. I was able to save them. And still sticky.

You can reuse them just like the 3M Filter Mod.

So you can test out the sound difference.

So if this mod is reversible by keeping the original filter I don't see many inconvenients to try it. I definitely like the sound signature of the stock z7 so I will try the mods in your way to see if the sound can be improved without affecting too much the character of this babies. Thank you for being dare to do the filter mod!

Don't start on it yet.

The sound can be reversible, but the Netting over the Z7 can only be repaired.

Let me make a few how too Images to give you an Idea of the rout I took so you can decide what is best options for you.

Like Whitigir has said repeatedly, do this mod if you have already done the other mods, But still want more Detail and highs out of the Z7

and of course proceed at your own risk

Nice work, but hell...my hand may slip and that knife would go right through roflmao. Small Scissor is the best application

Thanks and very good point, someone could Tape off the area around the the cut location using layers of thick tape for thine cardboard exe.

Yeah If anyone chooses to do this mod, Do it how ever works best for you.

I'm just throwing out ideas and how I went about doing i so you can

Learn from my mistakes

Making Filters

This part is important only if you
want to learn more about the filters
and how to make perfect circles

Otherwise just grab some scissors and cut out what ever shape you want.

I'm 95% certain the stock filter is made out of Tyvek Paper
Just like the stuff used in USPS envelopes

  Wow impressive and methodic job!
I'd delay the filter mod a little bit but when I'd be ready, thanks to this posts, I'll do it with more confidence.
Thanks a lot!

Thanks!

No worries, take your time. If you are already quite satisfied with the sound then I'd suggest skipping this mod.
Curiosity got the better of me, so I did the Filter Mod.
x-D

I'm glad I did thought because it allowed me to tune the sound just a little bit more to my liking.

I think when I have settled on a filter for my Z7 I'm going to permanently install it back under the Net and stitch up the holes. =)

Something interesting I noticed when Comparing Stock Filter with No filter is a reduction in Mid-Bass (maybe Bloated Mid Bass, Mid Bass Hump?)

I think the bass goes a little deeper and sounds a little cleaner with out the Stock Filter but the filter did seem to create more Mid bass.

Maybe Whitigir can chime in and tell me I'm just hearing thing =)
