While I have not listened to the MDR 7509HD, I have used the 7506, mostly for checking news broadcasts. Not sure how those two compare, but the MDR 7506 sounded dark, that is, as if the treble had been turned down. Maybe muffled is another word to describe it. Still, they did a very good job of resolving speech.
I also had a chance to listen to the MDR CD900ST recently. Again, not sure how it compares to the MDR 7509HD, but it sounded similar to the MDR 7506 to my ears--maybe better treble, but same strong but relatively undefined bass. I feel the MDR Z1000 is clearer, the bass is more defined and the treble clear or maybe "present" is a better word for it. Sorry, don't know how else to describe it.
Keep in mind, I have the AKG K702 and like them very much. I am not a fan of bass--a little goes a long way with me. Maybe because as I have gotten older, I have lost the ability to hear treble and if a headphone gives me too much bass, it interferes with my perception of higher frequency sounds. So, some may find the MDR Z1000 bright and with poor bass. But in contrast to the K702, which I find delightfully airy, the MDR Z1000 is "full."
