just a quick question

ive had the HD280 for a bit now but the villanous death grip is taking its toll on my head... im finding it rather uncomfortable and just plain annoying... its hard to part with my HD280 but would the V6 be a nice change?... i really dont mind the isolation as much now since ive gotten a pair or Shure's E3..

...

is the V6 a worthy adversary or should i not even bother??.. or should i chose the MDR-V600 instead??

any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks

the v6's sit on the ear, some find it uncomfortable.

I just find them too bright (so much so i'd rather listen to the MDR-v900 and make them my sitting-at-my-desk-at-work closed phones rather than the v6), and the 280 has much better deep bass extension (but too much isolation - i miss the phone ringing!).

IMO the HD280's were not very good cans, the v6's are much better in every aspect except for maybe the shrill highs. If you are interested I have a pair of like-new v6's with beyerdynamic velour pads (no more pleather discomfort/durability issues) that I'm planning on selling, they were only worn a handful of times and are exactly one month old, the cans were $80 plus tax plus another $23 for the beyer pads. Everything of the original packaging is there and I'm looking to get $80 shipped, I know these can be found for cheaper on the forums but this set is literally brand new (I think most sets are fairly well used) and I've already spent $100+ on them to do the beyer mod.

The HD280 and MDRV6 are nearly polar opposites. HD280 is flat, accurate to the bone, with maybe a hint of treble exageration. The V6 has piercing mids/highs and bloated bass, and dramatic recession from 300-900Hz.

The super-flat (boring, no fun) versus the super colored (piercing/bloated)... Both are excessive at what they do, to the point of being flawed IMHO.

IMHO the K240s is a better can all around unless you need isolation, then I prefer the DT250-80. The K240s needs an entry level amp or receiver circuit to do it justice. Still... I would rather listen to an unamped K240s than an HD280 or V6.

IMHO the UR40 or KSC75 are better than either if youre on a budget and dont need isolation.

You might want to check out the Sennheiser HD 201, which offers very good sound for very little money. I can write a little more if you're interested but overall, I'd rank this headphone ever so slightly behind the HD 280 Pro sound-wise but much higher with regards to comfort and practicability, perhaps even higher than the Sony V6 for that matter. In my opinion the HD 201 has set a new and very high benchmark for performance per dollar among closed headphones. For $20 it's definately worth a try. The V6 looks better and has more bass but the HD 201 is a bit more comfortable and doesn't have the inherent harshness in the treble which some people complain about.

thanks for the input guys.. the akg 240's as suggested does look intriguing

maybe i should of been more specific how i use the headphones... a little bit of gaming and ipod mostly... and isolation isnt much a of a problem for me and i wont be using amps for them as well (altho it makes it sound better but im still contemplating about it)

does the akg 240's have a good soundstage?.. and im willing to shell out $100 for a decent pair... im not much of an audiophile yet and im on a budget...

more suggetions would be appreciated... thanks...

IMHO the K240s soundstage is very god for the price. Not as spatious and distant as the K501 or HD580... but then its roughly half the price. Certainly has better soundstage separation thany comparably priced grado.

Needs an entry level amp though. A basic cmoy cleans it up across the spectrum. Unamped it sounds muddy. Although.... Personally I would rather listen to an unamped K240s than the piercing highs of the V6. Thats just me though.

You can get the K240s for $80 new/shipped on ebay. Print that ebay ad and take it to guitar center or sam ash to try and get a price match.

At $99 the MS1 is also a great bargain. M0re forward and aggressive sounding than the AKG.

IMHO $80 for the cans + $50 for a cmoy is a GREAT budgent rig. IMHO you should take advantage of the ipod line out and amp it... thats one of the Ipods strengths IMHO... a GREAT sounding line-out.
