1) sell the cans on ebay to someone who can recable them
2) learn to recable them, trust me its not that hard
3) buy a new pair of cans, the K240S is a wonderful headphone that is semi-open but mostly closed. so what are you going to be using these cans for?

The other headphone suggestions (ATH-AD700 and DT770/80) are either out of my price range or 'open' which is not desirable. Thanks for your help everyone; I think I will stick with re-buying the MDR-V6s and may even get the DT-250 pads because they seem to be a major upgrade over the standard ones.

If your goal is purely functional, you don't have to go through all the bother of recabling. Just fix the break.

There should be three wires inside your headphone cable. Just cut around the break, and reconnect the wires. Solder is best, but you can also do it mechanically -- your local hardware store should sell mechanical cable connectors in the electronics section. All you do is jam the two wires you want to connect into them, and twist.
