I found an old pair of MDR-V1's amongst my stuff, which I believe my dad bought around 1986 or so.

Where do they fit into the hierarchy of things?

The pads are in good shape, but there is some nasty black foamy goo around the drivers.

Worth resuccitating?

All it does take is some minutes, come on, why bother ask here? Just give it a try!

Of course, that's the easy part. I'm just looking for a little history. For example, were these junk to begin with? Where did they fit into Sony's line of 'phones? Etc.

I've got my E2's and SR-60's already... i'm just curious about this find.

Back then, the MDR-V1 was at the bottom of the MDR-V series of headphones. It retailed for about $30 to $40. In fact, it was one of the cheapest Sony headphones for home use at the time; the only Sony headphones selling for less were the Walkman-replacement headphones and earbuds.

I used to have either the MDR-V1 or the Mdr-V2, I can't recall which now. At the time, I though they were pretty damn good, but it wasn't until I compared them to the MDR-7506 (aka MDR-V6) that I realised how congested they sounded.

If you are happy with them though, ignorance is bliss

PS: I think the current 'incarnation' of the V1/V2 series is the MDR-7502.
