I'm getting ready to drop ~100 on my first pair of headphones and this nifty pair caught my eye. I won't be using a receiver for the headphones, but that might change in the future. It'll just be used for the computer games, movies and music off the computer, and my mp3 player.

If I don't use a receiver, is it a waste to get these headphones?

It depends what you want in a pair of headphones. If you want to hear details in your music you've never heard before, and pick it apart and hear the instruments individually, the SA1000 might be the ticket. However they are a bit thin sounding and lacking in bass compared with other phones in this price range. It's a tradeoff that I made when I picked SA5000 over say K701 or HD650.
