the mdr-ma900 is an insanely capable headphone.
it really is something else with the resistor network bypassed, cable replaced/shortened, and plugged into a low distortion, HQ amp that can handle the low impedance after the resistor mod (which means high current requirement).
the magni 2 uber that i've had for a long time is kinda crap. I heard the ma900 'grain' that people have been describing. I just finished soldering an amp known as "the wire" or "wire with gain". no caps in the signal path (my source has no DC offset, or it's in sub-microvolt range). it's lifted all my headphones to the skies. no longer do my ears get overwhelmed during intense passages. headphones don't "choke"
ma900 is kinda like the hd650 that evolves with better equipment
the imaging is just incredible on this. granted you placed them on your head exactly right (so both ears get the most equal sound wave) without glasses on (duh What) or hair in the way (seriously)
the way this huge driver moves air is to thank for what I'm hearing, I think
again I'm repeating myself, but drums/percussion sounds awesome
highs are gentle but incredibly detailed and undistorted
sound is just BIG. the BASS is big. and it goes deep.
everything sounds kinda intimate but the soundstage is kinda wide at the same time. uncongested/inclaustrophobic is the adjective
instruments have well defined locations and space between them
there's this awesome holographic effect, a sense of depth in the sound. I hear how each instrument is on its own "depth layer" on some tracks, sometimes slightly behind the ears
a headphone just perfect for jazz, but it's great with everything. just sit and analyse what every musician is doing
I think a huge number of people who have disliked this didn't put it on right or didn't use proper equipment in the chain...
VOCALS!!
