Any suggestions to keep the cable of Sony earphones damage free... In the past 12 months I've had 3 pairs where the cable has become damaged (I think at the jack end) and I've lost sound in one ear.

I'm generally quite careful with them so is it possible I've just got duff pairs?

It isn't just you. Those cables are really bad

Sony was smart enough to make the wire VERY thin, and the insulation from some stretchy rubber.
So if you pull it, the insulation stretches, but the wire inside doesn't..

I agree, those cables are pretty shat IMHO. It's too bad they don't use something thicker like the Shure's, because I really enjoy the EX85's sound, but HATE the wire's thinness and aysymmetrical setup.

Are you winding your phones up & placing them in any kind of case?

I agree, My old EX71 got cable damage quiet fast I remember.
The best way I can offer - don't use a Winder or similar and well just avoid pulling and bend the cable too much.
I always take good care but these gotten lose anyway.

Still I was able to fix it before it killed my EX71.

I've had 3 sets of MDR-EX829V with me for going on three years now. I don't work out with them, but do take them with me lots of places. When on the go they stay in the plastic wind-up case -- never stuffed in a pocket. Cables are all fine, and these are far from the top of Sony's line!

i take care not to damage the cable but just as a precaution i put something called araldite (some glue that comes in 2 tubes which you mix and then apply. Its supposed to dry in 12 hours..) at the point where the cable goes into the earpiece of my 85.. Left them hanging upside down for a while to dry and the glue had gone inside a lil so now the cable is kinda safe from being pulled out of the housing of the earpiece..

I'm not sure how you folks handle your earphones but I had a old pair of EX71s that I basically abused to hell. I slept with them (which was hell for them since I toss and turn and they get tangled and pulled like there's no tomorrow) and yet they lasted about 6-7 months before they fell apart (and I had them for at least over a year prior). They feel like frail cables but they last a LOT longer than the cables on a lot of the UE phones I've had. However, I feel that the Etymotic cables are equally as good as the Sony cables and vice versa.
