Guys,
I would like to know your impression on this Sony MDR-CD1700. As of mine, the CD-1700 sounds great. It has very wide soundstage (significantly wider than the HD-580). The presentation is bright and revealing. It has very smooth vocal with very controlled bass(not that deep compares to my Senn HD-580). I use the CD-1700 with Meta 42 (AD845) and Sony D-515. The high frequency is also great. The best musical genre for cd-1700 would be vocals and easy listenings. The overall comfort is excellent. How about you guys?

I used to have the CD1700's, and I agree with everything that you said

i often use my cd1700 for home theater headphones. i run an optical cable from my dvdp into my md deck's current-pulse dacs, then into a cha47 amp. surround cues sound right with these cans. i watched "the matrix" the other night with them and was just blown away by the soundtrack with this setup. i have matched dipole speakers for my ht, but the cd1700 just blows them away.

Vocals are what the 1700 do best.
Are your 1700 modded in any way?

I bought this headphone from Ian (it used to be Vert's) and he partially removed the foam material in each driver. I don't really know is this a good thing or not. Do you think this headphone best the HD580?

thanks

Bootman & Redshifter,
We (engineers) love Sony MDR-CD1700.

bootman,
here is my modified ian mod for the cd1700:
redshifter cd1700 mod

i have to admit lately i am favoring my heavily modified v6 over the cd1700 for music. but for ht, nothing i own comes even close to the cd1700.

I never thought i'd see the day you'd say that red... that you prefer the V6 (albeit modified

)

My current pair are unmodified... Joelongwoods pair are AFAIK my original pair from last year with which I did remove the foam pads, and whilst I will admit (from memory) that removing the foam does make the Sonys clearer... that I personally prefer the slightly richer sound of the units in their unmodified form

That could be because i've matched them with the META42 though, because before then, they did sound very syrupy....

Yes, that is the mod that I did also.
I like it this way better than stock.
I also agree that this is a killer HT headphone.
Have you tried it with Dolby headphone yet?
I have (through my soundcard [SB Live] and powerDVD) with very good results.
(And I usually hate music through my soundcard, but movies with DH sound very good.)

It can, but it depends on alot of things.
Type of music and/or equipment used for example.
There is no "perfect" can.

(now I hide from R10 owners!

atease,
my v6 mods in a nutshell: foam filters over the transducers, and more foam behind and around the backs of the trasducers--without pressing against them (kills the bass). also, beyer pads instead of the stock sony pads.

bootman,
i have not tried dolby headphone yet. i have some headphone settings from my dvdp, but they sound awful.

Bootman,
I agree that the CD-1700 has excellent image making it very good for HT applications. Sadly, I don't have any DVD disc....otherwise, I could give my CD-1700 a good work out. I also have PowerDVD on my computer.

Whew old thread but... I'm getting a pair of CD1.7K out of curiousity (collecting some of them Sonys) and they're coming in next week. Any suggestions on where to get replacement earpads? JIC mine comes in all roughed up
