I've just done a search on this and cant find much info.....

Why do I ask? Well I have just persuaded a friend to upgrade from his Sony MDR-EX70's to some CD1700's (he liked my CD3000's) and I mentioned the foam mods to him to give them a sound that is supposedly more towards the CD3000 side of things.

What does it entail?

It's a rather easy mod actually, just take off the earpads to reveal 2 small foampads. Gently pull them off (they're glued on 5-6 dots) and put the earpads back on. All done and the treble has suddenly come alive.

The CD1700's bright? I think they may be called alot of things but bright isn't really in their vocabulary. I wonder if they need breakin or if there is something else going on in the chain.

They are brand new.

He is using a Terratec EWX 24/96 soundcard (not bright), and out of a Pioneer A400 integrated amp (bright, but I am sure the resistors in the amp must take their toll somewhere).

BTW I had no idea CD1700 were still sold as new. How much are they nowadays and where did your friend get them?
