I've never heard the 7506, but I do own the MDR-V6, and I've heard countless times that they're extremely similar in sound, with the 7506 being slightly more neutral if anything.
I love my V6's, and would certainly recommend the 7506 in a heartbeat, especially at that price. I also recommend that you get the beyerdynamic velour earpads for them -- they'll make the cans 10x more comfortable. Beyerdynamic | Padded Earcushions for DT250/DT280 | 942704 | B&H
They seem to be an either you 'love 'em or hate 'em' headphone. I liked them quite a bit when I first got them(I payed around $50 second hand)...then I got some AKG's and Equations, and now I never use the v6 except as a portable, because they fold up nice to fit in my knapsack. They're pretty harsh compared to my other headphones...but decent for rock and hip hop....but YMMV. They're a good deal for $50 though.
At my office, we have 3 pair for AV stuff. I assumed they were not very expensive since they were supplied to us by a local AV company -- surprised to look them up on Amazon and see their price.
Anyway, they are reference phones and they do a nice job of representing most things. 2 of my co-workers who use them periodically agree with me that my Grado SR80 is more detailed, clearer and has better soundstage. To me, the 7506 is fairly laid back sounding, neither punchy in the bass, nor exciting on the high end. They are very comfortable and can fold up rather compactly.
FWIR they have a big dip in the midbass and a big spike around 7k which can be real harsh with some material. They are almost the polar opposite of my k240 studio's.
This is funny, 2 weeks ago I was listening to mine thinking that they were quite good. They used to be my traveling cans, they fold nicely, are way sturdier than the Grado's and comfortable. Other than the soundstage, there is nothing wrong with the Sony's. They spit out what you feed them with. It is probably why some find them aggressive. They sound good on a portable but given an high-end source and they will shine.
There is a love and hate thing on the Sony 7506 (or V6) on this board. So it is up to you to decide.
It will be interesting to watch the stir on this board if Sony ever replaces them.

I've listened to the same familiar tunes with the sony's and with two other respected 'studio monitor' headphones, and the difference is pretty striking. Sony's are noticeably less warm and more harsh, with what sounds like an upper mid boost. Which sound signature one prefers is a matter of personal taste. I agree that with those particular cans, it's a 'you either love 'em or hate 'em' kind of thing, though I'm kind of in the middle somewhere. They've got a 'fun' kind of sound for rock and pop and they'll get the job done for $50 second-hand.

Do you mind if I ask which two other studio monitors you are comparing them to? I completely agree with your assessment of the 7506s, but I am curious what else you are compairing them to. Thanks.
You can't go wrong with them.
Sony Style is selling a refurbished pair of v6 for $39.99; DAKmark are selling new ones for$56.98.
Apart from the fact that they sound good for very little money, they are also comfortable, well built and easy to carry around. The v6 and the Grado sr80 are my favourite phones. When I have to use closed headphones I would pick up the v6. I use them a lot.

Look at my signature. The k240DF were designed specifically as studio monitors to have a very flat/neutral frequency response. They're the high end version of the regular k240's. The Equations are also designed to be monitor headphones. They're not as good as the DF's, but are more balanced sounding than the v-6...less harsh. I also have Event monitor speakers, which are a little mid forward sounding but they have more upper bass/lower mid warmth than the v-6.
These were my first real phones bought new in 1987. I still have them. I have other more expensive phones and these phones still hold their own. They are clear, clean and give it to you good. They are more forward sounding compared to audiophile phones but you don't miss a thing with them in terms of detail and clarity.
