Hi i was just reading over on akihabara and they are listing a new lineup of sony cans:

MDR-Z1000 / MDR-ZX700 / MDR-ZX500 / MDR-ZX300 / MDR-ZX100

the article primarily focused on the z1000 ($730!)

"The MDR-Z1000, targeting audiophiles, features 360KJ/m3 High power neodymium magnet dedicated to reproduce clear and high resolution midrange, as well as removable Jack Cable. It provides an impressive frequency response of 5Hz – 80 000Hz, with an impedance of 24 Ohms, and a sensitivity of 106dB/mW. According to the Japanese manufacturer, the MDR-Z1000 adopts nice ear pad that promises perfect noise isolation."

I would want to see a FR graph before i spend 2x as much as the SA5k and come up with anemic bass again. There is A LOT of high end competition out right now, i hope there's enough rested wallets to do a few meets and comparisons.

all these new cans and no new high end porta-audio sources.

Very interesting specs on those.
Any word from IFA on new Sony players yet?  I haven't seen a lot of info coming from IFA at all yet.  Of course it did just kick off, so maybe more Monday or Tuesday.

Interesting... they look more like monitors than anything, and I'm not sure I like the aesthetic that much. $730 is a serious price point though, presumably these are intended to be for more than studio use, I just haven't seen a headphone with the type of soundstage I would want in a headphone at that price point with cups as small and flat as the Sonys. But, then again, Sony has proven itself to be a pretty serious innovator in headphones time and time again - very excited to hear more about these.

[/rampant, unwarranted speculation]

Interesting. I don't think they look bad, but upon first sight I would not think they were $700 headphones when you compare the design with other companies. Regardless, I will be keeping my eye out for impressions/reviews on how they sound.

doesnt sony usually go for flash rather than substance lately? this seems like an attempt at least to reassert itself in a market that has thoroughly passed them in the last 10 years. is anyone on headfi at IFA2010? i would like to see if we can get a quick impression ...

Doesn't look too fancy, maybe it's aimed at the professional market ? They might still sound very good, looking forward to some impressions when they come out.

I still have my sights set on a MDR CD900ST or MDR V7 if my wallet cooperates and I get lucky. New Sony headphones, hopefully the Dutch dealers/retailers know more about these headphones.

The last time I visited a Dutch Sony dealer/retailer he did not know what a MDR V6 was. Then again most boring/standard looking headphones I see are usually Sennheisers although the MDR V150 and XB500/700 are becoming a slightly more common sight in Amsterdam.

I know looks aren't everything, but does anyone else think these headphones are ugly? Like really ugly.

Edit - Actually, now I've looked at them some more, it's not so much that they look ugly, but rather they look very cheaply made. They definitely don't look like a $700 headphone.
