It really depends on which planetary firmware you load and which internal cables and capacitors you replace.

Doesn't the WM1Z have an EQ function, plus some other DSP settings?

Well, I wasn't going to say anything, but out of the 4 screws, those are really not the 2 you want to be missing.

I’m no expert in the DAP market so I can’t really quantify value available today. Though I did purchase the 1A after the 1Z. I purchased even without knowing what it sounded like. Having it I simply use it on trips. But.........the paradigm shift occurred with the new firmwares which really take the 1A close to 1Z ability; even with both players using mod firmware. So that in itself is very amazing. Before it would take a couple hours on trips to get used to the possible 1A quality; though now the players sound way better.

Though all this may be dependent on personal tone pursuits. Meaning I never thought the bass was that great before the mod firmwares. Now the player can hold it’s own in the bass department and show an individual character where before it was anemic.......on all IEMs but the IER-Z1R. The 1A was always really good with the IER with firmware 3.01, now it’s spectacular. I feel Sony intentionally crippled the 1A sound, making room for the 1Z to cost more. Now the firmware unlocks the latent potential!
