SONY IER-Z1R

I personally prefer the Z1R’s midrange to that of the Solaris. While it’s less in quantity I’d say it outperforms the Solaris significantly in terms of timbre and on a similar, if not higher level of detail
Oh I agree. It's there, not prominent but it has muscle. Just the way the Sony does the sub bass I can see how it can be overshadowed. For heavy rock, go the ierz1r's

Both the bass and the treble on the Z1R demand loads of attention, agreed

I've never been so happy with an IEM. It nails it. I guess I'm a more musical person compared to reference. But isn't that the point? If Sony can deliver something better I'm sold. I have a feeling it will take awhile

I do love the Solaris's, but this is a whole new level. Also selling Solaris

So after spending more time with Solaris and ier, they are both fantastic. I've read some criticism about the ier's mids lacking compared to the Solaris. Yes I agree the mids are not as forward, but that doesn't means the ierz1r's are lacking. To me it means they are just not as prominent, the bass slam and sub bass is just phenomonal on the Sony iem. Of course the mids are not featured. I mainly listen to hard rock, doom. And they are perfect. Fantastic bass with such a sense of impending doom and space. I'm so happy with these IEMs. They are more musical but in this genre it works perfectly. Oh and paired with the zx507. Dabbling in the idea of the dx220. I'm new to high end stuff, but the feeling you get when you find something that works is euphoric. I used to be a Metallica fan, so I used wasting my hate as a comparison song and it just sounds unbelievably better on the ierz1r's. Next stop, electric wizard
My experience has been that you get a lot less for your buck when you spend it on DAP upgrades as opposed to headphones. Actually, to my ears, there is close to no difference between many of the popular DAPs out there (at least as far as driving IEMs goes). Not saying you shouldn't try out other DAPs, just don't set your expectations too high.

Don't get caught up in labels like "musical" or "reference". Unless you're a reviewer who's trying to provide an objective qualification of sound (while at the same time dismissing measurements as mere squiggles on a page... it's a funny world, ain't it?!), then just focus on what sounds good to you.

I agree, being too analytical is too tiresome. Just something that sounds good and I'm good to go
