So it was great news that Sony's latest firmware upgrade for the HAP-S1 music server allows digital output from the USB port to external DACs. The bad news is that, at least in my experience, the DAC will not function unless you have all components powered up (in my case a Schiit Jotunheim and Modi MultiBit) and then unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in. If you don't take this rather odd step you get nothing but silence.
I notified Sony of this problem and got nowhere. They basically told me how to connect a DAC and would not acknowledge any problems. Which is not shocking I guess. Anyone have the same experience or know a workaround? I'm concerned about the impact of constantly disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable every time I want to listen.
