Sony EX1000 Review and Impressions Thread (with comparisons to FX700, GR10 and e-Q5)

What are you using as source? I found the EX1k to be quite demanding to demonstrate the bass power and extension it is capable of. Compared Chord Mojo with lesser sources and the difference was huge with the EX1k

I still have my ZX300 that I really liked with my Andros a few years back and have been using them with both the IER-Z1Rs and EXK. Can't speak on the Mojos but I can definitely agree that the EXK needs a bit power to bring out the dynamics.

Zx300 and ex1k are awesome together for sure. Has anyone tried ex1k with that calyx m dap? Ive been thinking about selling my zx300 and getting a new dap, but i wont sell my ex1000 ever so it needs to be something that the ex1k sounds good with. Just looking out of curiosity and to change things up, i truly cant fault the zx300 at all, but, really interested in that calyx.

The new ZX507 pairs nicely. Great SQ, brings out a bit more sub bass from the EX1K and the sound staging/layering is top notch. Been really digging this combo lately.

Is it much different than the zx300 though? One of the other reasons i was looking at that calyx dap is its output power for full sized cans as well.

I have them... tbh not a huge fan even though on paper (overall signature, form factor, cable) it's pretty close to an ideal iem for me- but I guess you will find out for your own preferences  I still need to try a filter mod someone on the 4001 thread suggested.

Haven't actually listened to either of them in a while though (IEM use way down in recent months for the most obvious reason in the world)- I think I find the ex1000 the better IEM still, mainly for mid-treble balance & presentation reasons (even though this is probably the tricky area of ex1000 too, just a different type of problem that doesn't bother my ears so often). Actually think the 2000J makes a closer match (also had a mid-treble thing going on butof a more similar nature to 1000's), but the bass of all three exhibit some common qualities.

Look forward to another opinion on the 4001 though, not a lot out there (kind of flew under the radar I think due to price & people seeming to prefer the 3001).

I got them for 450 so, just hoping they offer something a tad different in performance. I love the ex1k but i want to use it a bit less so i dont kill it. Right now its everyday and id hate to not have it around. Basically i was looking for an alternative to it, and came across the 4001 for sale and just said screw it. That badass cable alone makes it a good deal.

@hshock76 Moving this conversation over to the EX1K thread in case anyone here is interested :)

Thanks for the updated info from E4UA. I also contacted them about 12 months ago but decided not to go with them due to the cost. Might re-look at it now, but the plussound option also sounds promising. I don’t know if the ergonomics from the E4UA adaptor will work with my ear shape? It looks like they will make the EX1K stock out quite a bit?

Thanks @Damz87 As posted the Modify 1Z thread, E4U finally replied me (in Jap) more than a month after first emailing them. The cost for the adaptor in metallic finish (similar to the finish on the EX1K) is ~ $209 including shipping to US. The reason for the high cost is that they source the original connectors to modify to their design. They stated that the Red and White connectors for the EX1K are no longer in production so they will use the Red and Blue connectors for the EX800-ST instead which are of the same design but just different colour. These are the only ultra short adaptors I can find and the setup will look like the 2 pics below which were posted in this forum in 2017.

Another option I highlighted as well is to explore Plussound which offer EX1K connectors as option. Their new Palladium Hybrid has been getting great reviews and the EXO 4 wire version cost ~ U$999 which is a great price to me for a TOTL cable with the latest technology.

Ill never understand why anyone, would ever spend 1k on a cable.

For those who are looking for a more inexpensive adapter + cable combo: Just received these, and they work like a charm. Cost me 45€ in total, including shipping. Not 100% flush, but they do the job. Just needs a hefty cable alongside it.

Anyone have any recommendations for replacement tips for the EX1K? Should i just give up on trying to find an original pair and buy JVC Spiral dots?

FWIW i do not like spiral dots on ththe ex1k, i just got a set of azla earfits, will report back if they are any good w the sony but i doubt it. I dont like wide bores on the ex1k
