Okay, the title kind of says it all. No engineering required, no pics posted, sorry.

All you have to do is buy ER-20s's (Not sure about purchasing the 50 cent cheaper Triple Flange tips), and take about an hour getting them on the EX-xx's. And, it sounds ugly at first, but get used to it (I did the mod yesterday), it will sound great. Noise blocking is way higher, but you can talk if you dont have music on. Listening to one of the phones is impossible for me, the sound is too far in your head, it sounds very strange.

They got less uncomfortable, but can be a pain, especialy now that it's getting hot.

Don't expect me to reply often, I have limited time right now.

couple pieces of advice....

don't buy the er-20s just for the tips. You'll pay about $15 for one pair
of ety tripple flange tips, when you could buy a pack of them for $10.
If you know somplace near you that sells them, you might even be able
to just buy a pair even cheaper.

Also, I'ved used the tripple flange tips on the original ex-70 from Sony,
and I agree that they do sound a bit better. Additionally if
you take out the "filter" (that little piece of paper with the tiny hole in it)
they will sound much better.

Alternatively, you might want to try the bi-flange tips that are made for
the original er-6 phones. They fit the sound tube of the sony ex series
phones much better. They are a bit more comfortable, and a lot easier
to get into your ears.

I've taken away the filter and....WOW....I am not even an audiophile, and I hear major difference! Clarity, the highs seem to come out a tiny bit more as well(audiences clapping is considered high by my standards)

Taking the filter off with a knife can be done as well, not hard, unless you have VERY bad hand-eye co-ordination. You got about half an inch of space to maneuver, so, just take it off easily with a knife.

Has anyone considered doing MD33 mod http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...highlight=MD33 on EX81s? Seems like these might benefit as well, but I was hesitant to pull them apart without knowing what's underneath the filters.

If, and only if, the EX81's ar ehte same as the 71's, then takign the filter away is very simple and not bad at all (If yo ask me). Use a knife, or a pair of scizzors, and just get it all off. Mine sounded louder, and less constricted, to be precise. Stuffing soemthing in there could be done, Id rather not sue the stuff on normal buds, I dont have enough.

It might be that your mod is better. Mine (If you can call it that) is still a bit annoying to have in, but not near as bad as I have heard from others (whiners! I hardly had problems the first time I put them in! and I put them in too far!) I enjoy the sound, together witht eh filterlessness P)

I'm glad the filter trick worked well for ya.

Here's another, that may or may not be to your liking.

Take a small piece of scotch tape over the back three holes. It will
very seriously cut down/out the bass. Then use a sharp pin to poke a small
hole in the tape, to adjust the bass to your preference.

The bass was a bit muddy to me before I tried this, and I was able to tame
it quite nicely.
